I never knew where I fitted in before, I've just noticed this forum isn't just for premmies! So thought I'd share my story as I've needed to write things down for so long.. And my baba has now been given the all clear from the hospital bar a couple more tests before she's 2. I hope it's ok to write this here
My little girl Evelyn was born on 20/06/11 at 8.11am (9 days late) after 9 hours of horrible labour where no one would listen to me when I told them it wasn't right. My contractions started at 11pm and within an hour they were less than 2 minutes apart. I kept being told to stay at home until 2am when I went in anyway. I was monitored for an hour and was only 1cm dilated. Her heart rate dropped to 80bpm then went all the way up to 170bmp with contractions so I was sent to a different hospital. They didn't have ambulances available so my mum drove us there. The original hospital didn't tell the hospital I was going to all the details so because we arrived by car they assumed all was fine. By this time my contractions were every 30 seconds lasting about 2 minutes each. I wanted to die and still no one checked anything for another 2 hours after they'd finally looked at her heart trace. I was still only 4cm dilated so she couldn't come out despite the contractions being so close together. They popped my waters and found meconium. Hit the emergency button, put me to sleep and got her out within 1 minute. Her apagar score was 0 at birth and only 2 after 10 minutes. She was without oxygen for 6 minutes in total. She was transferred to another hospital and lots of words were used like 'permenant brain damage' 'vegetable' 'cerebral palsy' 'limited brain function' all of which went over my head. Turned out my contractions were squeezing her too much and too hard but she couldn't go anywhere and that was the reason for her distress which resulted in the meconium aspiration.
She was in NICU for 3 weeks and came home on oxygen, which she had until she was 2 months old. They did a treatment on her where they 'froze' her 10 minutes after she was born. So her internal body temperature was 33 degrees. Apparently it reduces the risk of brain damage by stopping the brain producing toxins. She was on a ventilator for 3 days while they warmed her back up again during this time she had several seizures she went for MRI scans, had test after test until they said they wouldn't know anything until she was older and hitting milestones. She had a feeding tube for 2 weeks and then I was able to breast feed her myself since she came home she's amazed everyone including doctors and after our last hospital visit we were told she's developing perfectly with no side effects to her horrible birth or treatments i still find it hard to believe now and she's 14 months old!
Anyway, I just wanted to share a success story and give other mummy's to poorly babies a bit of hope. These babies are miracles and a hell of a lot stronger than we think
Here's some pics of my beautiful girl (excuse how many there are )
