I've been TTC for quite a long time now and am more and more disenchanted with the service I get from the NHS. Dont get me wrong, the nurses are absolutely lovely every time I have to go, but do wonder whether I should have tried to save to go privately from the beginning.

After 4 months TTC with no periods I went to doctors, who did lots of tests (no problems found), and then said they couldnt do anything until 12 months of trying. Fine, I get that. When i went back at 12 months, they said it was 12 months from my first period after starting trying, so a further 5 months wait. I then got referred, and more waiting just to see a sepcialist, who then spent a whole 5 minutes with me and said I needed to have an HSG - another 2 month wait. And then another month to discuss the results with him.

Anyway, this has gone on a while and I have had 1 MC. However when i called to see my doctor the week after the MC because I was worried about more bleeding they didnt have any availablility for two weeks!

So we have now decided to go private, and I have got all of my patient notes. Now the interesting thing is that on one of them the specialist suggests I might have a Polyp but he wasnt very concerned about it. Well that's the first I've heard of it! And another thing, apparently I "declined" an internal exam when I was bleeding for 2 weeks. I specifically remember the GP saying "I could do an internal exam but it's probaby not worth it at this point" - well I'm hardly going to say "Oh please do stick a cold implement up my whatsit am I???" I just said agreed with them.

Sorry for the venting, I know a few nurses who work so hard and have so much patience, it is a job I couldnt do. I just feel I'm no further forward after this long. and I also appreciate that we even have an NHS, not everyone does.

Has anyone started off on the NHS and then gone private? did they do all the tests again?

Hi we started on NHS and am now private, initially because of the length of time I was waiting to have a HyCosy done. That led onto the FS suggesting timed intercourse (which he doesn't do on NHS), so here we are several hundred pound worse off and on our second round of timed intercourse. We did bring all our notes and test results with us. The FS was the same one as NHS which helped I think. Blood tests and SA are only valid for a certain amount of time (I think 12 months) and then need repeating, which will cost a lot to be done privately.
Good luck

Forgot to say we already have children so wouldn't have qualified for NHS funded IVF (our next step)anyway which was also a deciding factor in us moving to private treatment.

I am fairly happy with the nhs so far, I had been ttc since Jan 2011 by November 2011 they had done all the relevant blood tests and book o/h in for his s/a's by February 2012 I had my first fertility appointment they put me on waiting list for lap and dye and ovarian diathermy (drilling) which is now booked for 25th June (4 weeks time). So all in all it will have took 6 months from first referral to get my op, after I have this op tho if nothing happens I am not sure of their next step. x
