:flower:Hi All,
My LO has been on formula for 5 days now and I read that you should give them water to avoid constipation. When she was on mixed EBM and FF she had 4 soiled nappies a day and now we have 1 or none but she has loads of wet nappies to make up for it :winkwink:.
Should I give her water anyway or do you have to give water when they become constipated  and how much should you give  and when:shrug:.
She is not a hungry baby and I am afraid that if I give her water she would eat even less formula (at the moment she eats about 3oz 6 times a day and is 5+4 weeks)
Sorry but this all is so new to me and I have no one to ask so I really appreciate all your comments. :flower:

Giving them water doesn't seem to make them drink less formula ... I'm a bit new to FF though as I BF all of mine and it is only since Tattie had Kaylum that I've learned how to even mix formula without getting lumps LOL.

I would probably say that, if she is obviously straining and you aren't getting a dirty nappy from it then give her water, but otherwise don't worry about it too much :hugs:

What formula are you using? Some formulas can cause constipation. For Evie, I use Aptamil first stage and she has never had constipation. Quite the opposite lol! She went thru a phase of only pooing every other day but her poos were never hard, they're usually like chicken korma or peanut butter.
I would also say if your LO isnt showing any signs of constipation then dont worry too much about giving water :)

my little one of 2 weeks is taking 3oz max on each feed. we tried giving water in between a few feeds and it didnt seem to agree with him, then the midwife toldme not to give water. he doestnt poo everyday but the midwife said thats fine, and he also does a lot of wet nappies. hope this helps
x

Thank you all!:flower:
Carmen is on Cow and Gate at the moment but I am waiting to box to finish and then swich to Aptimel as I heard so many good things about it. :hugs:

i have never been told to give water alongside formula to avoid constipation  they should be getting all they need from the formula

Only give water if there is a problem. If the poos are coming out without any problems and aren't too solid, don't bother! If you do need to in the end though, only give about an ounce a day - that's all that is needed to keep things moving in most cases. Oh, and don't forget to check for burps as they seem to take in more wind when drinking water.

I dont give water to Omar, it makes him sick. As we started weaning I give him few sips while eating. When he was only taking formula, I never gave him water. Formula is 70-80% water, so babies get what they need frm it. Before starting solids u dont need to give babies any water unless they'r constipated. Omar never got constipated (he's on Aptamil) & I FF frm day 1.

we were told to try him on a little bit of water each day so he gets used to it for the summer months? And he is teething so she said to replace the fluids lost by the dribbling?

my lo is on aptimal and i didnt have a problem with her being constipated.
babies go threw phases with their bowel movements but i wouldnt give them water everyday.
i've only given lo it twice when shes been struggling
