Hi, my sister just had a beautiful baby girl! Now her doctor said newborn's need to feed ever 4 hours but she sleeps the whole night. So my sister sets her alarm clock for ever 4 hours and wakes her up to feed. Now I could be wrong but I tolled her that if the baby's hunger she will wake up. I don't think she going to starve herself in her sleep! Am I wrong?

Yes, newborns need to be woken to feed. Yes, newborns can starve themselves as they may not have the proper hunger signals required for survival (and dehydration is the main issue) - it sounds like her baby may have jaundice or something similar. Newborns will drop their birth weight rapidly and dehydrate if they do not get any breast milk or formula. This can happen very fast and is quite dangerous.

So yes, you are wrong :) Sorry, hehe. Hope she starts feeding more frequently soon. My SIL is currrently dealing with the same issue (mine fed every 30 min!!).

While I'm sure you mean the best, any important questions about newborn feeding should always be verified with a medical doctor or nurse for safety reasons. If she didn't wake the baby, she could dehydrate.

 Thank you will tell her right away! Not that she listen's to me anyway! But in this case a good thing!

It's ok :) I've given incorrect advice before myself. Nobody's perfect :)

PS I'm in Montreal too :)

It's ok :) When I was out of hospital Evan was sleeping about 6 hours I though great this is fab! Then the midwife came round (he was 5 days old lol) and he'd lost 14oz and was still jaundiced, so I got a bit of an educatonal telling off and had to feed him 3 hourly until he gained his birth weight (2 weeks) He woke every 3/4 hours to feed anyway after that x x

Our doctor gave the same advice. You should keep to a schedule and wake the baby if needed. Seems mean, but the baby will go right back to sleep once they are done feeding if they are tired.

I just moved here two months ago, I have to say I'm not loving it. I thought I new some french before I came here, but now I feel like I don't know any!:saywhat: And the heat! I'm so not liking that! I do like the thunderstorms
and the rain! :rain: I also heard that its hard to get a doctor here, and now I'm worried I will be pregnant and have no doctor!

LOL me too!! I moved here from Vancouver in May!! And I speak zero french. My OH is from here though so he's always around to translate for me but I'm rather isolated :( I'm on the south shore :)

Yes I've heard the doctor thing is hard, I'm still waiting for my carte de soleil.

Same here. I was told every 3 hours (Day and night) until the baby is back at their birth weight. After that every 4 hours (or on demand) is fine.

Lol, good to know I'm not alone! I moved from Newfoundland. I'm waiting too for my carte de soleil I have to be here 3 months before I can apply. I'm in Saint-Leonard.

When I was born I slept 12hours solid each night from birth and went from 6lbs 2oz at 3 days old to 5lbs 4oz a few days later. So yes I agree at waking to feed a newborn.
