I'm hoping not to return back to work at all but have heard from a few friends that all employers make there employees that leave after there maternity leave pay back there maternity pay or they have to return for 3 months. How true is this? How do you pay it back in instalments or as one big chunk?

Thats not true hun, You'd only need to pay back some of your maternity pay if you were paid more than the standard SMP. Meaning the Six weeks at 90% of your wage then the 33 weeks at £128.78

It also depends on the company, if this is the case it your be in your HR policy documents.

Is it anyone's policy that they can just leave n owe there work nothing ? Or am I really clutching at straws here haha

I only get the standard SMP £128.73 a week, so would not have to pay back if I didn't return

I'm pretty sure that if you only get statutory pay then you don't have to pay it back. However, if your company enhances your maternity pay, then they may have a clause in your contract that says you have to pay it back if you resign.

You'll need to read through your contract, or better still just ask HR!

Yeah-if you only get stat pay then you re-pay nothing. But if you receive occupational pay on top then you will need to re-pay that as they are counting on you returning
