Went for my 11w ultrasound and doctor said there is extra fluid around the neck and this could possibly be Downs Syndrome or a Chromosome Disorder. I asked for the exact measurement but they said I had to go to a specialist to know for sure how much extra fluid was there. This is my second child and I didn't have any problems with my first so this is all new to me. Has anyone else experienced this and if you have do you have any advice? I have been trying to stay positive but I am freaking out. Thanks!

I have not gone through this, but I have had NT scan....11W IS on the earlier side of the NT scan window and even a positive results from NT Scan does not mean anything is necessarily wrong.

Are you also getting the triple test done? They usually do this with an NT Scan and the results are usually 90% accurate if done with the triple test.

If you have not had the blood test done, then I would request it immediately and get that done as it is more accurate than the NT scan alone.

Please just know that your odds are very low and you likely will have a totally healthy baby.

I would even request a re-scan at the 12W-13W+1D mark, as this would be right inside the 11-14 week window for NT scanning.

Please also know that a positive NT scan does not 100% mean your baby will have DS...non-DS babies also can have excessive fluid near the neck as well.

:hugs: I have no experience with this, but I would ask for a re-scan and the triple blood test as well and ask what are your next steps.

I had told them that I didn't want to NT scan but they did it anyways. Therefore, I have not had any further tests done yet. I have an appointment with another office on Tuesday the 4th to have the fluid actually measured. I will be 12 WK and 5d on Tuesday so I am hoping that the first tests was just too early. They didn't measure the fluid with the 11 wk scan they just said it was slightly abnormal. Am I going to classified as "High Risk" for the rest of the pregnancy? I have a 3 year old now and never went through this with him.

I think the measurement alone doesn't mean much at all. You'll need the combined test (blood and scan) to get a more accurate result (still not 100% though) if you want to know 100% you'll need to go for an amniocentesis (where they take a sample of amniotic fluid), but that does carry a small risk of miscarriage.

Try not to worry too much right now, it likely means nothing.

Did they do a blood test as well? My best friend had a high risk of downs. They base it on the scan results combined with blood test. She was given a 1 in 5 chance which is the worst odds they can give you. Her baby turned out fine.

I know from going through that with Her just how stressful and worrying it can be, take heart though, there's still a very high chance it will be ok. :hugs:

Not sure where you are but in U.S., they have a blood test that can tell. My best friend was given the option of an amnio (which she declined due to miscarriage risk) or to have her blood work sent to US for a very hefty fee, which she paid and got 100% accurate results within a week.

I had a 3.4mm NT reading and crap bloods. My DD has 22Q11.2 gene deletion syndrome. She is bloody marvellous! I am SO glad that the cvs did not test for that particular issue.

I have not gotten blood drawn or anything else. Doctor just called and said it looked like more fluid than normal. I have tests on Tuesday that will hopefully give me more answers. If the blood tests come back bad would you suggest the amino or how accurate is that? (I am in the US.)

it depends on your thoughts about possibly having a baby with down's syndrome...I try not to sound harsh, but basically, if you'd have the baby anyway and just want to be prepared, I'd just get the blood test and, well, prepare if it comes back bad. If you would abort the pregnancy if the baby turns out to have Down's, you'll need the amnio to make sure. This is your decision, and don't let anyone make you feel bad about it. I never had an NT scan with my first because I didn't really care, I would have had her anyway. However, I will have it this time because I don't just have myself and my partner to think about, but also my daughter, and I think having a disabled sibling wouldn't be fair on her. All the power to the parents who can handle that, but I think it couldn't. it's a personal choice.

again, I don't think you'll need to worry about any of this, but the blood test will probably reassure you in that anyway. :)

If the blood test comes back good do they tell you what your chances are of having a child with ds is? Also, can they do the blood test whenever or does it have to be a certain time frame like the NT test? I will be 12w 5d at my next appointment. The dad and I have spoken a lot about what we would do if the results came back bad and we decided to take a break from the conversation because we couldn't agree on a decision. We also have another child to think about and it's a very difficult decision. I never had the test with my son either because I knew it wouldn't change my mind regardless. I am just hoping for some good results on Tuesday.

they'll probably do another scan and then take bloods. I have my scan booked for 13+2 I think and they'll take bloods the same day. generally I think they say between 11 and 13 weeks, so you're well within that. We've not really had the discussion yet either, but because we don't really have any reason to worry (both around 30 and healthy, no family history of any abnormalities etc.), we'll keep that to IF something comes back bad, which I'm pretty sure it won't. I know your situation is slightly different, as they've already told you the measurement is slightly high, but honestly I wouldn't worry until you've had further testing. the 12 week scan is just for dating usually, so it's not done by the most senior member of staff, and they generally use better machines for a re-scan or anatomy scan (20 week scan), too. so it may just be a combination of not-as-good equipment and not-as-good technician.

I do think the results come as a risk of x/y, so it'll be like a percentage risk of something being wrong. I'm not sure at what risk they'd advise to do an amnio, but again, that's a bridge to cross when you come to it, and chances are you won't.

good luck for tuesday, I'm sure all will be fine!

Just got back from the specialist. The measurement of the NT is 9.2. They did a blood test and I should hopefully get the results in 7-10 days. They did see the nasal bone so hopefully that's a good sign. This was not the results we were hoping for and it's kind of an emotional rollercoaster today.

I have a NT scan scheduled for Friday afternoon. I didn't have this done with my other two pregnancies and I'm a bit nervous. With my last pregnancy, I lost my son at 29 weeks. So they're doing more extensive testing this time around.

I didn't have this done with my 3 year old son either. The results today were very discouraging. I hope everything goes well for you on Friday. Sorry for the loss of your son.
