I recently got my nuchal test results back with a result of 1 in 280, which according to my hospital is classed as low risk. I was a bit worried about this as I'm 27 and should have a background risk (with no testing) of 1 in 1000. When I spoke to the midwife she said something in my blood was increasing the risk as the nuchal measurement was fine (2mm at 13 weeks). She said my levels of AFP and unconjugated oestrogen were low and thats why the risk was higher than expected. I'm a bit confused as I didnt think the combined test (which I had) took AFP into account?

I just wondered if anyone here has had a similar experience? I'm really worried as to what might be causing this. I know I'm still classed as low risk but cant help worrying and thinking the worst! I'm going for another scan next week to look for soft markers but this still wont give me a yes or no answer, the only thing that will is an amnio which has a higher risk than the DS risk, and I dont want to risk miscarriage. Plus I wont be offered it anyway.

Has anyone had anything similar happen? Any advice would be greatly appreciated x

Hey

Dont worry yourself over the Nuchal Test.. When I was pregnant at 21 with my 2nd baby.. My results was 1 in 4 chances of him having downsyndrome or any other genetic disorder after we had already lost our first one to a chromosome disorder. They offered for my to end the pregnancy at 12 wks for him. We continued on and it really didnt get better results with the nuchal, but we hung on and ended up doing a CVS which the results were inclusive and then an amnio. Now I have a health 3 1/2 Boy. Soo dont stress too much.

Have a look at this thread https://www.babyandbump.com/gestational-complications/203105-anyone-been-highrisk-downs-but-refused-amnio.html

I also had a fine result for the NT test, but the blood test was not so great, so I got a combined result of 1:232, which makes me screen-positive and I did get offered amnio. However, we figured the risk is still not high enough to risk miscarriage, so didn't do the amnio. It happens to quite a lot of people, and the majority of even high-risk people go on to have healthy babies.

You should have a detailed ultrasound around wk 20 - maybe there you could mention it to the doctor / technician, that you are worried about DS and ask them to look carefully for soft markers. They should be doing that anyways. If they find any of those markers, you are likely to be offered an amnio at that stage. If they don't find anything, you shouldn't worry, as at that point, the chances of having a baby with DS is extremely low.
