Hi all

I had my gyno scan this morning which wasn't what I expected. The GP told me it was an ultrasound but it was like a wand thing they put inside you and they can view your cervix and ovaries.
Anyways so she said I have PCOS which explains my irregular periods. However I am way more fertile than an average woman?! The average woman has 6 follicles on her ovaries (they release the egg) and I have 40?! Does anyone understand the science behind this? She said she still can't confirm if I ovulate as I'm only on CD8.
My head is just in a big whirlwind now. Was today good news or bad news? If i have more follicles does that mean a higher chance of releasing multiple eggs = twins/triplets?

Anyone can shed any light on this I'd be super grateful

i'm not a doctor but woah, i'm seriously confused on that one lol

hi
i have pcos and unfortunately it means im infertile as i have 40 or 50 eggs that sit on my ovaries semi developed and i never ovulate, due to pcos and the hormones due to this i dont even respond to clomid or iui drugs, it took ivf to get a egg out of me, i over stimulate and get ohss which is very dangerous and they get loads off eggs but they are very bad quality as they have been sitting there so long semi developed. i sincerly hope you have better luck than me.

hey i have pcos on my left side and endo on the other.
i have literally no folliicles on the endo side (4or5) and was told i have around 30 odd on the polysistic side.
i dont fully understand it myself,i think your body stores the eggs rather than realising them.
m currently doing ivf so im on a very low dose of injection because the risk of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome and you can be hospitalised.
the nurse explained it like this, if you have 1 egg drop when you have your peroid imagine how it would feel if you had all those eggs drop.
i dont know your situation but you can still conceive naturally with pcos so dont worry x

my hubby has a low count too so thats why we doing ivf x

thanks, my DH has low count also so finding out today that its both of us is a huge bummer. Do you know if clomid is an option for those with pcos? im really keen to try a few cycles

I am not sure about that one either...naturally the body ovulates one egg, sometimes two. On a medicated cycles pcos women have a higher risk of multiples. And usually a doctor will cancel a cycle if you have more than 2 because its a huge risk, unless you are doing ivf. Its also a study that women with pcos are more fertile as they get older. But I disagree with the doctor about you being more fertile than an average woman. I don't get that statement at all.

I wouldn't say your more fertile than the average woman, it just means that the eggs don't always drop so there stored up as such. Where as If you did a scan on a lady with no problems she would only have 1 egg ready.

With your hubby having a low count, some doctors might try you on clomid and timed intercourse but depends on how low the count or it could be ivf x

It's not that low I dont think, he got 3.1ml.
I've put him on Wellman conception now so hopefully that will improve :)

that is low. my hubbys was just less than 1 millions in sept and now it 5million, the average man should have higher than 20 million x

I agree with mummy wannabe, in a typical cycle you have say 5-10 follies that are ripe to O, but usually only one will ovulate. But both ovaries produce follies. Sometimes you get two eggs that ovulate or one on one side ovulates later and you have double ovulation but usually, just one pops.

I was reading up on this just yesterday, even though u might have loads and loads of follies, what happens is, your body tries and tries to ovulate with all these extra follies, a 'normal' woman would (when ready to ovulate)have one dominant follicle and release 1 egg, whereas a pcos woman her body tries and tries with all these follies but the follicle never ripens fully and doesn't ovulate an egg. So you can have all the signs of ovulation but never properly ovulate.

That makes sense WANBMUM. She said that because I have so many follicles my body can't decide which egg to release which is why my periods are irregular. I'm going back to my doctor on the 31st to see if he will give me clomid. I've done a OPK every day and still never even had a second line which makes me think I dont produce the LH hormone.
TTC is so frustrating enough when you do ovulate and still don't catch the egg, let alone when you know you don't O at all :(

Ttc is difficult regardless of anyone situation. And to be honest you have an easy problem compared to most. I had the same problem as you. And if the only problem is ovulation then usually you get pregnant within the 1st year with medical induction. I got pregnant within six months. And my cousin had the same issue and she got pregnant on the 1st round of clomid...with twins!!! So shedding a little light for you. Goodluck..

Bump2b I had exactly the same issue when I had my scan, the dr said he could see 20 follies on each side (so 40 all in all like you) he said I was very unlikely to ovulate a healthy egg with that many follicles, he said they would not react to the LH surge as there were so many, or that they would be immature or bad quality.

Have you had a AHM test. My AHM was high which is a good thing in a way, it shows you have lots of eggs left, my Dr said that I was very fertile in as much as I had lots of eggs but I had so many that my body couldn't cope with ovulating 1 healthy egg each month. I was about to start IVF and he said if the 3 cycles of IVF didn't work I had a high chance of getting pregnant in my late 30's as I would have less eggs by then. I am in my mid 20's so waiting 10 years wasn't relaly something I wanted to do!

Anyway the cycle he said I wouldnt ovulate I got a BFP so one of those 40 follicles must have released a good enough egg. Don't give up hope, it took us nearly 2 years but eventually it worked. My OH also had some sperm issues but I think the main issue for us was my overies having too many eggs.

:dust:

There is still a lot you can try as pcos is very common in infertility, the first thing will probably be clomid or even femara as its cheap and can work really well for a lot of women (i know lots that conceived with clomid)
This didnt work for me as i was resistant so i then had ovarian drilling done, i ovulated 2 weeks later and fell pregnant but mc (i think due to lining issues which i have only just found out about) i then ov on my own another 4 times.
im now doing ivf and have just done an egg share scheme as i have a dd and cannot afford the full price of ivf, i produced 32 eggs of which i got 16, im now 3 days post egg collection and i have 7 lovely embies.
Try not to worry, the first step is finding out the problem which you have done, now you just need to find the right solution for yourself

My advice would be to keep pushing for treatment as it may take you a bit longer to concieve but the chances are high that you will get there in the end. Stay positive :winkwink:
