Hi there
Emz - this is a great 70-200 lens - I loved it, its heavy but take amazing shots in almost any conditions, low light, action etc https://mansurovs.com/nikon-70-200mm-vr-ii-review
We have just changed our kits from semi-pro to a more amateur and easy to cart about set up.
We had a D80 (mine) a D300 a D700 and a huge range of lenses incl 24-70, 70-200, 50, 85, 14-24, 120-300, 105 macro and a 150 macro. All 2.8 (except the 50 and 85 which were 1.4)
Its worth paying more for pro lenses like those as they really do perform so well and hold their value - nothing wrong with finding a nice one 2nd hand.
I also really rate the prime lenses .. less convenient as no zoom, but they do make you take 'good' pics
DH was very into his pics and while living in the UK we did a fair bit of semi pro work
Once we moved out here we found we just weren't taking the cameras out and about (3kg plus tripod is not fun to carry about!) as we were doing lots of walking, hiking, kayaking etc so our pics died off a little and most of the pics we took in our 1st 9 months here were actually taken with my little Lumix LX3
So rather than have $$$$ of camera gear sat on the shelf getting dusty DH sold the lot!
And we have replaced it with a Lumix GF1 which we love and recommend unconditionally.
We have 14-45, 45-200 and 20 lenses for it. Its small (its a 4/3rds camera rather than a traditional DSLR)
Picture wise its comparable to any entry/mid level DSLR and half the weight and size. And because its small we take it everywhere - so get great pics as always have a camera on hand.
I also still have my trusty LX3 which take great snaps and is so dinky and handy
