If you are on Flickr you can add black backgrounds using a seperate website. If you search under Flickr DNA on Google it gives you lots of additional effects you can use on any pictures that you have uploaded onto Flickr.

This one could almost be an advertising image for samaritans :)

i like this one, the selective colour is done well, but i'd have cleared the windowsill of bottles etc, coz i'm finding those drawing my eye away a little. Also, a shift off-centre (probably down) might have been effective. or cropped to a square image, less negative space at the bottom and leave the bottles in.... so many possibilities! :)

Thanks, that's true! I've used a layer mask to show the original green enamelling on the keyring:

I wanted to keep the bottles etc in the background, but I agree with shifting off-centre, there is quite a lot of tile space...

In regards to being distracted by the background, how would you suggest to do it so that they are still there, but not so imposing/distracting?

Neecee I think you have a natural talent for photography! Love the beach one!

Now I'm gonna contradict myself and say maybe by shifting the focus up a bit... i.e. have the flower closer to the bottom and include a tad MORE bottle.....
or
crop to a square image with the flower close to baseline.

(Just my ideas, the image is great as is:))

Neecee I agree with Wendino you definitly have a natural talent
