This is something that I really want to pursue as I feel the potential benefits far outweigh the notion of it being 'a bit gross'.

How soon do I need to choose and 'book' with a placenta encapsulation specialist?

Would love to hear other people's experiences, if you have any, too :flower:

I spoke to somebody the other day and as far as I can gather you can book whenever. It'll be a bit easier for me because I'm being induced so can give her a rough date. But they go off your due date. As long as you store it correctly they can either pick it up from hospital or once you're at home :) I'm excited! So many benefits x

Thanks very much :D

I have emailed someone this evening, I think I may be just slightly out of her area though - we'll see what she says.

I want to believe I'll be brave enough to have a placenta smoothie too!

I was gonna go for that! I'm slightly scared though, defo gonna spend the rest of the pregnancy psyching myself up haha!

I would totally go for encapsulation...a smoothie? :haha: I'm not that brave! I'm trying to convince DH it's worth the price.

I didn't have to book my specialist until 2 weeks before my due date. I was a bit unsure at first but have heard a lot of positive stories so am going to go for it!

I completely lack the funds for encapsulation. I think trying a smoothie would be great..... but my biggest barrier will be convincing OH to make me one!! I know it can help with bleeding and that would be very useful for me. But having one soon after the birth would mean packing the blender and having OH mixing it up while I'm having my initial skin to skin.... I think he'd puke.

:haha: Celesse!

My OH has agreed to me doing on it on the basis that I don't talk to him about it because even the word 'placenta' sends him funny - it's quite useful when he's being annoying :haha:

I was really surprised but my DH is the one who was all for it. It took me a little longer to come round!

Just wanted to report back. My boy arrived at 5.58am on 25/2 - a speedy, drug free water birth. I've had a placenta smoothie for both of the last two mornings and am absolutely convinced it's been the main thing keeping me going. Until last night I'd had about 4 hours sleep in the 3 days since giving birth but still had bags of energy, especially after drinking my smoothie. My bleeding is also well under control. Just waiting for milk to arrive now!

what does it taste like? Do you spice it up or just plug your nose and chug it??

It's nice - just tastes of fruit. My midwife made mine up with berries and banana I think. It just tastes like strawberries. You sip it like a normal drink, can't taste any placenta at all. She only uses a thumb sized piece in a whole drink so it's not a huge amount. X

Popples, that is fantastic! Congratulations on the birth of your boy.

It's great to hear a positive outcome, I think I'll go for the smoothie too :D xx

Hmmmm curious! And congratulations, here was me thinking you shoved the whole placenta into the blender and whizzed away!! Silly me!!!...

BLEUGH - even I wouldn't want to knock that back! I also draw the line at frying it up with onions, as a friend's auntie apparently did.

I should imagine really that its actually very nice and would be an amazing dish cooked and served correctly - i think its just the gross factor that puts people off haha!! :haha: Still... not sure id go for it - i dont even eat prawn toast since i realised theres actual prawns in it! :dohh:

Just a quick question, hope you dont mind.

How did you go about requesting this? Did you have to ask your midwife months before your due date to arrange it?. I have just been reading some posts and a few websites say that some hospitals refuse and have different policy's.

I know their are Independant Encapsulation specialists that you can pay etc, but if i was to go down the smoothie route, is it as simple as speaking with your midwife? I didn't even think the midwife would make smoothies up for you whilst in hospital.
If im honest iv never thought about this before, but from reading posts, it's got me intrigued with the listed benefits.

Sorry for all the questions x

Becki, where are you based?

I can't imagine it is something that a midwife would do in the UK (unless you were prehaps using an independent midwife) and you would need to seek the help of a placenta encapsulation specialist. I know there are differences in how the placenta is handled if it is to be consumed, be it through encapsulation, smoothies or frying it with onions. xx

I met my specialist through the antenatal hypnotherapy classes I attended. She's an NHS midwife but also has private patients and is qualified in a range of complimentary therapies, as well as by the placenta network. She can't make the smoothies in hospital as they don't have the facilities - she came to our house to do mine then DH brought then into hospital, one per day. She does a whole range of stuff depending on what you want - capsules, smoothies, balms etc. Its your choice! We just had to provide a sterile container to transfer the placenta to after it was delivered and she gave us some notes to show the midwives there on the day - e'g making sure the placenta was kept and was inspected for meconium.

Popples, what did you use as a sterile container? I'm slightly baffled as to what I could use (it's probably something really obvious but I just can't get there :p xx
