HI there, I have just had my third miscarriage so not feeling too great now. However I have read that progesterone helps to reduce the possibility of miscarriage by 50%. Has anyone heard of this and been prescribed progesterone after multiple miscarriages?

There are a lot of different reasons a woman might have multiple miscarriages, from chromosomal abnormalities to blood clotting issues, and how effective any given treatment will be really depends on what the root problem is. I have heard about women being put on progesterone suppositories to treat recurrent pregnancy loss, but those suppositories would only be helpful if the reason you're miscarrying is due to a hormonal imbalance, e.g. you have a luteal phase defect. From what I've read, that isn't the case for most women.

How long have you been trying to conceive? Have you seen a reproductive endocrinologist yet?

I've had 2 miscarriages and my Dr. did put me on Crinone which is a progesterone vaginal suppository. I'm only five weeks pregnant, so I'm hoping for the best! My Dr. is a fertility specialist, so maybe she's extra cautious, I'm not sure. When I went for my intial bloodwork to confirm the pregnancy, she did say my number was a little low, 8.5. Since I started the medicine, it's up to 21.

Hi Molly - sorry for your losses. I have not taken progesterone but have been told by my doctor that it does help reduce the chance of miscarriage. The problem is that it can also keep a bad pregnancy going that your body would normally miscarry. For me, even after 3 MC's, I decided that I would rather miscarry a bad pregnancy again than carry it on. Some people do take it because they have been tested for low progesterone and have had no problems. Definitely talk to your doctor about it.

Good luck!
