Hi my LO has been sick since 5pm yesterday (wasnt sick in the night). Then he was sick this morning. Yellow stuff. He had some milk (BF). Then he did a poo but it looked like it had lots of blood in it (smelt like blood). I phoned my doctors who were really unhelpful and said they had no appointments. I phoned Nhs 111 and they said he needs too be seen so I phoned back my doctors and I managed too get him an emergency appointment at 3.20pm. He has also since then projectile vomited up his milk feed. He was fine yesterday morning and the only thing I can think that was different is that I gave him an Egg Custard Pot at lunchtime. Hoping someone has some Advice as im really worried. Sorry if some of this doesnt make sense im on my phone x

How does he seem in himself?

Lots of blood in his poo sounds serious. Does he have diarrhoea? A fever? If you are really worried, can you take him to an emergency room?

It looked like Blood. And smelt like blood. It wasnt diarroeah though. Im waiting for My OH to come home from work. His Temperature is normal and he doesnt seem too have a rash on him or anything. X

He is very tired but not crying. He gets upset before he is sick and then he seems ok after just very tired x

It sounds like it's possible it could be gastroenteritis (stomach bug), which is really common, but not very pleasant. It's good you're getting him seen. They may not be able to do much as sometimes it just needs to run its course, but better to have it checked out. If they don't think it's that, it's possible it could be teething. I know my daughter vomited up bile (that's the yellow stomach fluid, basically just means their stomach was empty when they were sick) and also had really loose acidic foul smelling poos when she was teething, so it's possible it's just a really bad bout of teething, except that it's seemed to come on so suddenly. Hopefully it's just a little tummy bug though and he's feeling better soon. They're usually a lot better in 24-48 hours.

Thank you. Its the blood in the poo that scared me. I do think he may have a bug as he is very tired and just wants too sleep. X

Glad you got a doctors appointments hope he better soon

How did you get on with the doctor?

Blood in poop is a common allergy symptom. And both eggs and milk are common allergy foods for little babies. I'm guessing the egg custard pot had both in it? ...just another theory to consider. Blood is extremely scary to see, but apparently not a huge worry if there is no fever and the baby appears content. Look up cows milk protein intolerance- you can see what the diapers look like and compare with what you saw.

Vomiting is not an allergy symptom, though (I don't think, anyway...)

I hope your little one is better quickly, and that the blood resolves very quickly :flower:

There is a bloody diaper picture here (amongst quite a collection... Be warned!): https://happyhealthymama.com/2012/06/our-journey-with-breastfeeding-and-mspi.html

Also- I was wrong on the vomiting- that is indeed a cmpi symptom, too:

You (or anyone else with a similar concern in the future) might find this helpful:

I think dark/black blood is considered worse than fresh red blood as it tends to be old blood and indicates that the bleeding has occured higher in the digestive tract rather than the rectum or the anus. Sorry for using the proper names for stuff - feels really silly lol.

My guess also is that the egg custard has disagreed with him. Hope he is feeling better now.

Great link, meep. Kelly Mom always has very good resources/information :)

Any improvement, Leannie? :flower:

Hi just thought would update. We took Him too doctors yesterday and they sent us over too hospital. We were kept in for a few hours and we were giving him diarylte 5ml every 5 mins to hydrate him. He was taking this fine and we were due too go home and he vomited the whole lot back up. They sent us home anyway and he was sick all night. Phoned hospital this morning and they told us too bring him back in. We have been giving him the diarylte again and increasing the dosage but he has just been sick again. So worrying. The nurse this morning said she was shocked they sent us home last night. They did say if it was a reaction to the egg custard he would be better by now. X

The Nurse did say too offer him some breast milk but he is refusing everything apart from the diarlyte.

Poor little man. I hope he is much better soon :flower:

It does sound bad that you were sent home if he was that sick then and there. Ugh. How stressful. I have been thinking of you- sending lots of good vibes your way. :hugs:

Oh dear, poor little man. It must be a stomach bug or something. They should be able to take a stool sample to check for whatever is causing this surely? Or indeed to rule out bugs, and thus start looking for other reasons why he is so ill and having bloody stools? At least he is taking the Dioralyte, even if he is still being sick. Every bit that stays down will help to replenish vital electrolytes and fluids that are being lost. :(

Thank you. He is not responding as they would of liked too the fluids orally so he has got too go on a drip now and we will be staying overnight. xx

They just keep saying he has caught a nasty bug. The doctor said his tummy feels fine. The last time he went too poo was yesterday morning which was the one that had blood in it x

I guess it's hard to poop when you haven't eaten anything. The drip will be great for him - he can't throw that up. I am sure he will be just fine soon. Hang in there. It does sound like a truly evil bug for your poor little guy! :(

hope he gets better soon. im sure he will once the bug has ran its course. its awful when there ill. thinking off you

Thought I would update. We were rushed in an ambulance last night too st thomas hospital. My poor little man had 'Intussusception'. I knew it wasnt just a bug like they kept saying and when he wasnt responding at all too the drip I knew it was something more. They just kept saying he had bug but he was writhing around the bed in pain nodding off and waking up crying every ten mins.He also wasnt responding to the fluid at all which he should of started perking up. Luckily in the change over last night we had a lovely doctor who actually listened and looked at the picture I had taken of his nappy with the blood in. He took a look and said there was a lot of blood and that it was worrying. I had been googling and come up with 'Intussusception'. The doctor then also said this. He had all the symptoms including the dark green sick. The doctor then got straight on the phone and ordered us an emergency xray. This was at midnight and we had been in there since 8am that morning as I took him back as they sent us home the night before and he was sick all night long. When we got back from Xray he had a dirty nappy and it was full of blood. I went and got the doctor and he took one look and got straight on the phone to the surgeon. Then we waited while they accepted us and we were taken in an ambulance to St Thomas hospital. When we got here one of the nurses was horrified that he had not been given pain relief regulary she said he was in so much pain he was literally shaking from it. My Poor Baby. He had an ultrasound and they comfirmed he had 'Intussusception'. They then did a procedure where they had to put a tube in his bottom to blow air into the bowel to get the bowel in the right position again. If this didnt work it would of been surgery. Jamie's one was quite bad as it has been left a few days and when you have this condition its best treated straight away as can be life threatening when left too long. Its been hell and I have literally been in pieces but he is resting now and we just got too hope the bowel doesnt spring back which it can do sometimes within 24 hours. They are hoping I can breastfeed him again in the morning. He hasnt had any food since thursday morning. Where his bowel was blocked it meant his poo was pushed into his tummy which is why he was throwing up the dark green sick (which was actually poo). Our Local hospital shouldnt have missed this. He has a tube down his nose at the moment to help relieve the contents of his tummy. I hope this all makes sense as im on my phone. I just want other people too be aware of this condition and trust your instincts. X
