Hi there,

I have been introducing food very gradually to my baby boy. From around 18 weeks we started baby rice and then a week or so before Christmas started pureed veggies.
We are now on a variety of different veggies and fruit and he is thriving on it, he loves his food.

I cook batches of food and freeze into ice cube.

I have been giving him 3 meals a day for just under a week this is how it goes:

Breakfast: 3 cubes of fruit/small banana & 1 cube of fruit.
Lunch: 3 cubes of veggies
Dinner: 2 cubes of veggies & 1 cube of fruit.

My question is, is this normal to be giving him 3 cubes per meal?
Should it be more now he is nearly 6 months?

And now that he is nearly 6 months I will be starting him all sorts of new stuff like meat, cheese, bread etc.

How do I portion control them?

Sorry for the long post...x

I have always let my lo decide how much to eat, if he's hungry he eats, if not he won't. Lol I wouldn't fret about doing portion control personally

I give my LO one cube then a dessert! But she's ickle (though is 7 months now). In a couple of books, I've read 6 spoonfuls per food (so 2-3 different foods per serving), but if you baby wants more, then give them more. As long as you get him regularly weighed and he's not jumping percentiles, I wouldn't worry too much.

My lo is 6.5 months and we are on half a Hipp purée pot or roughly 4/5 ice cubes per meal, 3 meals a day. I've also started adding in a piece of fruit or fruit purée after veg purée twice a day this week. Or sometimes at lunch I will give him finger foods to practice with instead but a lot ends up on the floor. I'm starting to freeze in little pots now rather than ice cube trays since he's eating more each time. He hasn't dropped any bottles yet, still has 4 7/8oz bottles during the day and one night feed so approx 35oz.

Rio is 6 and a half months old,
he has 5 spoons of dried porridge or baby cereal mixed with water in a morning, followed by half a pouch of fruit puree if he still wants more.

lunchtime he has homemade meals, but about the equivalent to a small jar of baby food. (he does have the occasional jar if we are out or in a rush, and has about the same amount)

and for tea he again has about a jar amount of food, followed by either more fruit puree or a yoghurt.

he usually leaves around 2 or 3 spoonfuls of the meals, but will continue to have a dessert of fruit or yoghurt lol.

I will also offer one or two pieces of 'finger foods' throughout the day, but most of the time he just plays with it at the minute.

he is also still having 4/5 7oz bottles a day so between 28-35oz.. usually closer to 28oz.

:) x

Thankyou everyone for replying. I just find it all so confusing lol!
I'm not trying to portion control, I'm just trying to understand what is the norm.

I spoke to my health visitor today and she said to up his food to 4 ice cubes per meal. As he has started to wake at 11pm again, she thinks he is hungry.

He hasn't dropped any breastfeeds although I think he is spending less time on there than before.

I think I will carry on with the icecube way of doing food simply as it works for us, means I can mix each meal up as I choose.

What my hv did say though which I found helpful was to make sure I give my little dude water throughout the day as with the extra food it could make him constipated.

We are trying blueberries and papaya out tomorrow...I'm loving giving him new foods :)
X

I dont really worry how much or how little. I use those weaning pots (i got mine during morrisons baby event, poundland etc do them)

So she'll probs have one of those followed by a yogurt, for example.

My girl is 6m on Saturday & eats 3tbsp of homemade dinner, 1 tbsp of pudding approx

Last night she had hardly any, night before she practically inhaled the lot. It's all homemade & frozen into these portions so until she's consistently eating it all I'll keep it that way.

She has 1tbsp porridge & 3 toast fingers for brekkie & BLW lunch which doesn't really get eaten.

That's a lot of food for that age! At that age, Violet didn't even get solid food every day. I'm not sure if it was at 6 months or 7 months where I had to remind Owen to offer her solids at least once a day while I worked (he's a stay at home dad).

As for portion control, stick to what you're doing, if it's working. I'd let the baby decide how much to eat.
