I'm thinking about starting Aisling on baby rice and/or porridge mixed with formula to try and get her to gain a bit of weight. I was wondering if it was possible to buy small cartons of formula? When we combi fed early on, we used Cow & Gate Comfort but it said to throw the carton out after 28 days which would mean alot of waste if I'm just using it to mix with the rice etc. So if I could get a smaller carton that would be great - I'm such a cheap skate!!

Powdered formula? Perhaps youd consider switching to ready made cartons? They are more expensive but would be more cost efficient for your needs rather than wasting what you dont use

Yeah that's what I'd suggest. Cow and Gate first milk comes in 200ml cartons, about 55p each, keep in the fridge for 24hrs.

That's a good idea. Could I use it for 2 days worth of feeds even if it means using it when it's just a little over 24 hours old? I can't imagine that it suddenly turns bad as soon as the clock hits 24 hours!

Hmmm see the small cartons say 24 hours but the larger ones say 48 hours ....

I think a small carton is roughly 5oz or 7oz if i remember right, how long would it take you to use that?

I'm not sure to be honest, I haven't bought the baby rice yet so not sure how much milk is needed. I think I'll buy some tomorrow though. I wonder why the different cartons have different life expectancies, that's a little odd.

OK, I was wondering how much milk & powder was needed to make 2 spoons full - It worked out at just about 1- 2 scoops of liquid to 3/4 - 1 baby spoon (very little amount ) of powder. we are talking like 10-20 mls liquid. And that was to get it to a runny enough consistency.

So you would probbe better just making it up with water, then cow milk later as you will not use a whole carton of the 250mlof milk. Unless yo just give her the milk in a bottle to.

I would imagine it would be ok to use for 48 hrs. Put it right at the back of fridge and not in the door. I put a clip it thingy on the spout of my cartons in the fridge to keep them sealed too.

Yeah you could make it up with water but I reckon milk is best, more nutritious, which I guess it what you're aiming for, plus and a bit sweeter tasting for LO.

Yeah, I definitely want to make it up with milk to get some extra calories into her. I wanted to start her on a doidy cup too so I think I'll put some formula in that and see if she'll have a drink at the same time, hopefully I won't waste as much then :D

i know boots do a smaller carton of powder - around 1/2 size of a normal carton of powder

Thanks Sara, I decided to buy a normal tin a few days ago, figured it'd be cheaper than the made up stuff even if I do end up throwing some out.

I have figured out what to do with the excess though - I was making apple and cinnamon muffins tonight and realised we were out of milk so used formula and they taste yummy!! :munch:

LMAO think I'll give my spare SMA cartons of powder to my mum for her cooking! :)

LOL! I once nearly put Ruby's formula in my tea because we were out of milk, but I smelled it and that put me off!
