When I had my first child 9 years ago, it was ok to make bottles in advance and store them in the fridge. Why has this changed? It's such a pain making them on demand especially when their still so young and their feeds can be at anytime. I find myself having to pre empt when she is going to feed so I can get it ready in time, otherwise I end up with a screaming baby on my hands!! Does anyone still pre make up their bottles??

I think the guidelines changed because of worries about bacteria. But I make them up in advance. It's what my mum and mil did and we are all fine, and it's unmanageable to make them on demand especially if lo is as unpredicatble as mine! What I do is make a couple at a time so they are not hanging around too long, cool them quickly in cold water and store in the back of the fridge at the top. I take cartons when we go out so there are no worries about keeping feeds at the right temperature.

i premake mine, i followed hv advice for first 2 weeks but now i follow my own :haha: x

i'm planning on breast feeding for a few weeks but after words when i move onto formula i'm just making them up in advance using the little formula dispencer things that sit inside the bottles. just a case of heating the water up n popping the formula in :)

Yeah I premade mine with DS1, and haven't changed a thing this time round! I even told my hv who said it was fine, just they have to advise along the guidelines. Sod trying to wait for water to cool when you have a screaming baby lol

I premade all of Molly's. Just didnt have the time to make them fresh each time.

I just run the tap till the water is warm and make the bottle with that.

I premake 3/4 bottles every time, but if im going out then carton it is

Yep, I pre make mine eventhough I was told over and over not too.
All my nephews & niece was fed with pre made bottles and there fine.

it's to do with the formula not being sterile, they must have changed the way it is made now. I have the tomee tipee bottle warmer which I use, when she starts storing I make up the feed and leave it to cool

Just wanted to ask, when you run the tap warm, is it from a special heated tap or just regular? Cos if it's just your regular water supply, that comes direct from your water tank which has been pre-boiled by the boiler. That water is sitting for a while in a very non-sterile state. Should never drink warm water from the tap, can be very unsafe.

Not trying to be miss know it, just thought I would mention just in case.

I pre-make mine also I did it with my first & my mum did it with me as does my sister, never did me or my son any harm, I tried fresh making for a few weeks but it didn't work out. I'm glad someone mentioned about the warm tap water I still wouldn't risk it even if it was a special heated tap as there can be risk of bacteria in the pipes.

we've invested in one of these hot water in 3 second things so i'm sure that'll come in handy :)

It's regular water and the water heater is plenty hot enough.. We don't sterilize his bottles anyway, just use hot soapy water. Nobody in the US that I know boils water for bottles.

i started premaking bottles when LO turned 6 months. wish id done it sooner would have saved a lot screaming lol xx

This was how it was recommended when I had my daughter who is now 10, and son who is now 6....B/F the last 2 but was really confused when my friend said she had to make bottles up fresh per feed! xxxx

first time round i made the bottles up in advance with just water then added the powder as and when needed. DD1 always drank it room temp no probs
this time round the advice is the formula isnt sterile so should be added to the water hot so i make 2 or 3 up in advance adding the formula straight away. then stand the bottles in the washing up bowl filled with cold water to cool them quickly then stick them in the fridge. microwave when needed - also not recommended but works for me & DD2.

i actually asked mymidwife about this last friday at my sisters appointment as i had pre made min with both my ds and she actually said they have done all these differant rulings to make it harder to bottle feed making more people want to breast feed. She also said its just incase one doesnt get drunk and left at the back of the fridge when you premake the next lot and then by the time you remember it will be too old to use. I told her that i had premade them with my ds's so i would premake them this time she kinda gave me this disappointed look because i wasnt breast feeding but other than that she said every mum will do it how they are used to doing it x

Im so glad Ive found this!Ive been making bottles as and when needed during the day but been using cartons during the night(theres no way Im waiting half an hour for kettle to boil+cool in the middle of the night with a screaming baby) but if I carry on getting cartons for each night feed Im going to be skint by the end of the month

Lots of people have said to me-oh why dont you just make them in advance, but I wasnt sure whether it really is ok.

So what do you guys do?Make a few up before bed-store in fride then just warm when needed?

That would be a LOT easier!
