Hi! :hi:

I will officially be TTC at the end of Sept :happydance: after my DH's vasectomy reversal next week and I have already started taking folic acid.

What I would like to know is, is there any benefit for my DH if he were to take it too?

Also, can you have too much? As I am currently taking multi-vits and they have folic acid in them too.

Thanks! :)

DH doesnt need to take folic acid - it is for the spinal cord development which is, i am afraid, all down to you! However there is stuff he can take - zinc i think - you will find other forums on this.

I would be careful taking too much vitamins - some such as Vit A are toxic over recommended dose. If your multi vits have at least 400 micrograms of folic acid then just take them - you dont need extra dose. However if you are diabetic or have a neural tube defect (such as spinda bifida) or a family history of this then you need 5 milligrams (much higher dose). Hope this helps and good luck ttc :flower:

Thank you for your reply.

The multi-vits have 200micrograms in them and the folic acid i'm already taking is 400micrograms, so I am currently consuming 600micrgrams of folic acid. As there is no problems within my family and therefore wouldn't require a higher dose, am I ok taking this amount or should I drop to the recommended 400micrograms only??? thank you

Hi hon I have copied and pasted from this page https://www.patient.co.uk/health/Pregnancy-and-Folic-Acid.htm

From what it says on there it wouldn't do any harm to take the extra.

* For most women the dose is 400 micrograms (0.4 mg) a day.
* If your risk of having a child with a spinal cord problem is increased then the dose is higher (5 mg a day - you need a prescription for this higher dose). That is, if:
o you have had a previously affected pregnancy
o you or your partner have a spinal cord defect
o you are taking medication for epilepsy
o you have coeliac disease, diabetes, sickle cell anaemia, or thalassaemia.

In addition to folic acid supplements, you should eat a healthy diet when you are pregnant which should include foods rich in folic acid.

Also my OH has been taking Fertilaid since before his vas reversal, which has various things in it as well as general multivit and minerals, their page is https://fertilaid.com/male-fertility.asp. I would guess that taking normal supplements could work out cheaper, but I thought I'd make it easier for my honey by getting him just one thing he needs to remember to take lol.

Multivitamins are a good idea, I've been taking pregnacare conception as it's got the folic acid as well.

Good luck and fingers crossed for :bfp: s for us soon!

I'm only taking the 400micrograms of FA, but I'm constantly taking it twice a day! I often forget whether I've taken it or not, so take an extra one to be sure!

I found out I was taking more folic acid than I was supposed to. If you ignore the amount taken in as part of food, I take the standard tablet of 400 micrograms and my breakfast cereal is also fortified with 100 micrograms per 30g serving. I am terrible at judging portions so probably having even more from the breakfast cereal! Done me no harm so far but it shows I really should remember to read the packaging more carefully!

Thanks for the info, much appreciated  I bet we'll pick up some leaflets with recomended stuff at the clinic 2moro, but Ill def try Fertilaid...well not me, my DH LOL.

I eat a lot of cereals that are rich in folic acid and then take an own brand folic acid tab. The way I remember that I've taken it is that it's part of my morning routine. I keep the box right by my toothbrush and take it just before I do my teeth. I keep meaning to buy some vits for my DH. Is zinc the way to go or should he be taking multi-vitamins?

Zinc and selenium are important for :spermy: as far as I am aware. If you check the RDAs on a multivitamin it should tell you how much is in them.

Fertilaid is quite expensive, and most of what's in it could probably be got cheaper, but I needed to make it easy for OH by getting him 1 thing to take rather than a whole bunch lol:winkwink:
