Hope you don't mind me popping into baby club a bit early, but I've got a question about the starlite swing and thought this might be the best place to post!

Someone has very generously donated their swing to us recently. I have put new batteries in and tried out the settings but the problem is that it doesn't seem to swing for long on any of the speeds. In fact, I'm not really sure whether it swings on it's own at all, or only because of the momentum after the first push to kick start it. When I don't push it and turn the swing motion on, I can hear it whirring away and it looks like it's trying to move but it comes out more of a wobble.

It's a few years old so not sure whether the problem is just due to age and perhaps the swinging mechanism has failed over time? As I haven't tried it with a baby in yet, I'm also not sure whether maybe it just needs a bit of weight in the seat to keep it swinging?

Does anyone have experience with this swing and know of any ways to get it to work? It's not so much of a problem if it doesn't work, as I can still swing it manually and the music and lights work fine, but I'm just wondering whether I'm doing something wrong and maybe there is a simple solution to get the swinging motion working.

It's because there is no weight in it :) Once you put baby in it it swings much better :) x

I had this swing and the same thing happened to ours. One side seemed to struggle to swing with and without lo in it. Tbh it was a total waste of money as lo hated being in it anyway. Its not like we used it much at all so it shouldn't of struggled to swing x

I second this. Dylan hated it.

I third it. Alex hated hers too

Was meant to be £99 but we got ours when argos messed up the pricing (wasnt it like £35 or something) and i am pissed off i even paid that for something that doesnt work

Mine was inherited so I didn't pay for it, but I have to say that after seeing it and playing with it in the flesh I am shocked that they charge so much for it in the first place! Especially if they are a bit temperamental as a lot of people have reported.

Looks like I will need to try it out when the baby is here and see if the swing works better with some actual weight in it!

Joel hated his and we have just given it away, did the exact same thing you are reporting and it has nothing to do with weight im afraid to say, ours worked great one day and then was struggling to swing the next even once we had replaced the battaries x

Ours worked for about a week then stopped swinging, but made the most irritating clicking sound. There was a thread here a few months ago and loads of others had the same problem.

On the up side, at least you didn't pay for it, and if it doesn't work when LO's in it, they might enjoy just sitting there anyway.

That swing still makes me so annoyed when I think about it, because Mamas and Papas would take no responsibility for it whatsoever, and it cost a fortune (I will never step foot in that shop again, but that's a rant for another day!).

A positive story - Max loves his and spent the first few weeks in it a lot and did most of his napping in it. Didn't use it from 10 weeks - 20 weeks but put him back in last week and he still loves it

My LO liked it when he was little and we didn't have any problems with it!

Jessica is fast asleep in hers at the minute! She didn't like it until the last few days... I have now reclined the seat for her and she is clearly more comfortable in it!

My son loved this swing it would sent him to sleep every time. The clicking noise annoyed us but Matthew enjoyed the repeated clicking. Couldnt have done without it in the early weeks.

Same here, my LO hated it so we ended up getting him a wee cheapy (£22) and le loved it!

We had the same clicking noise in it and i also thought the material was very tough especially round the bit you fasten them into, not very flexible for wee baby's,just my opinion.

I have no problems with mine.. it swings fine with weight in it, and doesn't click!? It's also 2nd hand so has had some use already too!

I did find that normal batteries weren't powerful enough to run the lights tho, and have to us rechargables in it.

Wyn loved her starlight swing and we didn't have any problems with it. She got rather annoyed when we had to stop using it as she got too big, I'm glad we have it ready for the next baby.

Without it I wouldn't have had a shower for the first three months! It fitted perfectly in my bathroom and she would stay swinging in it for over half an our or more quite happily.

We did find when the batteries ran down that it would swing slowly or labored but a good set of duracells would last weeks of it being used for long periods most days.

After a bit more experimenting, it actually seems to be swinging just fine on speeds 1 or 2. It struggles with the higher speeds and comes to a halt altogether when I put it on the 5th setting, but 1 and 2 seem quite speedy to me anyway so I think that will be enough!
