Heyar.

So I'm about ten weeks, and found out about baby about six weeks ago. And I was a smoker. As was my mother when she found out she was pregnant with me (I'm the oldest of three).

My question is, is what I did the safest thing to do? I was on sixty cigs a week. And when I found out I was pregnant, I finished the deck I had (I know I shouldn't have, but I'm a real stickler about wasting money), and basically went cold turkey. Which I've been told isn't the greatest idea at the best of times.

So if it' not the best idea for me (unless that's an old wives tale), would it do any harm to the baby? I know smoking is bad for baby, but I just want to make sure just gong *chuck* hasn't had a negative effect either.

I think you did the right thing (cut it out completely), I have two friends who were pregnant at the same time both smokers. One went cold turkey, her baby was fine and she had a healthy baby. The other one didn't she kept smoking about 3 a day...her baby although full term was born with only 4 pounds and a lot of complications and had to stay at NICU for several weeks...I think in a way it's like me...I have PCOS and at risk of Gestational Diabetes, with my daughter I cut on sweets and carbs cold turkey...and I just did the same in this pregnancy, I wouldn't like to blame myself if something goes wrong with the baby...

I think you did fantastic!:hugs:

I also went cold turkey as soon as I found out :) I think we done the right thing :) well done on quitting

I have always gone cold turkey with my pregnancies (and this time I will NOT start back up after baby is born!) My doctors have never done anything but encourage me to keep it up when I told them I wuit cold turkey. I have had several friends insist that their doc told them the stress of withdrawal is worse for the baby than some smoking but. I have never had a doc tell me that! I know that for the first few weeks it almost seems true because the withdrawal can be so bad but I already felt guilty about poisoning myself with carcinogens and toxins, I just cant do it to a baby no matter how badly I want one. Good luck - I know how hard it is but it really is best for you and baby!

When i spoke to my Ob she said it depends on the person weather or not cold turkey is good for them. She said some women can quit be perfectly okay, other women are naturally stressed all the time and those women should quit slowly if quitting is too much on them. As for me she said I should lower my amount then wear the patch for a few weeks, but not to start on the highest one to start on the second dose and be off it by second tri. She said the only reason she wanted me to do it that way is because I'm already deemed high risk as I have had several losses.

Wow. Good to know I'm not alone in going cold turkey!
@nyllioness - oddly, I've not found quitting to be difficult. Except when my jealous ex found out & spent quite a bit telling me my OH was going t be a deadbeat because we're young & have been on again/off again since we met in 2008. But that's another story!

I'll probably ask the midwife as well when I go for my antenatal. TEN DAYS! SQUEEP!

Mega thanks <3

I went cold turkey. As soon as the test came back positive i handed my almost new pack over to my friend and told her she could have them. Congrats for quitting girl

I tried cold turkey and it just didn't work for me I got so stressed out I was crying at anything and getting myself really worked up so i cut down over the past few days gone from 20 a day 6 days ago (before i found out i was pregnant) to 5 a say to 3 a day and now ive just had one today and tommorow I intend on having none at all :) I cut down very quickly and it's made it less stressful but everyones different, I'm happy that from tommorow those Mary cigarettes won't be part of my daily routine anymore! I've found keeping busy and avoiding situations where I want to smoke has helped. After food was my big craving moment so Ive now taken to constantly having fruit on hand to keep my hands and mouth busy! Good luck :)
