My lo is almost 2 (2 weeks away) and I've always wanted to keep him ERF but we just never had the funds for a new car seat. After watching a show yesterday on child car seats it only reinforced my need to get one for my lo. I have found a rear facing car seat for up to 18kg/39lbs for £150 which is the cheapest I've seen. We would be stretching our budget massively getting this, spending his birthday money on getting him a car seat. Do you think it's worth starting to rear face again after a year of forward facing?

I think it would depend on his weight and how much use you'll get out of that seat. Will it only last him a year if he's on the bigger side or can you get at least 2 years out of it? Do you plan to have more children, meaning it will be a good investment for the future? Does it do anything else, like convert to a high back booster? I'm a big ERF fan and we did exactly this when our daughter was a year - pooled all her birthday and Christmas money - and bought her ERF seat, which we love. Our daughter is small, so we'll get 3-3.5 years of use out of it with her (until she's 4-4.5), and we plan to have another baby, who will grow into it right about when she grows out of it. Plus it also converts to a high back booster when FF, so we can literally use it up to the full 10 years that the manufacturer will guarantee it. For us, that was a good investment. I think though in your case you need to weigh up the cost against how much use you'll really get out of it. In an ideal world, we'd say that safety doesn't have a cost too high, but you have to be practical at the same time.

I definitely agree that you can't put a price on safety - and £150 is a good price considering I've seen a lot ERF car seats go for £250+. My lo is on the small side 26lbs, 84cm/33in so I do think we could get the full 2 years out of it - car seat is up to 4 years rear facing, and then forward facing for
Up to 7 years. I think we're going to do it, I just feel guilty that he won't have much to open from us on his birthday, though I know he won't remember this birthday anyway.

Both my 2 are in ERF seats - people seem to think I'm a bit nuts, but I'm happy that they are safer.

If you can stretch to it, I'd suggest getting a 25kg seat rather than an 18kg seat so that you get your money's worth out of it. In theory an 18kg seat should do your LO till around 4, but that depends on the size of the child - a bigger child will be less. A 25kg seat will do till around 6. We have an 18kg and a 25kg seat, and I wish we had bought 2 x 25kg seats. Our 25kg seat is the britax Two WAy Elite which was £220.

I agree on trying to find a seat that has a greater height/weight limit. My kid is tall and skinny, so we went with a seat that has a really high height limit for RF. He was 36.5" at his two year appt. We got the Britax Clicktight Boulevard, and there's no way he'll outgrow the height limit before I am ready to FF him.

We got the seat at a great discount using Amazon Warehouse Deals. Basically, someone had bought the seat and returned it without using it... And we then bought it at a significant discount. I'd look around for deals. You could ask those who might want to give baby a gift to contribute? Maybe contact a local baby store and ask about potential discounts or upcoming sales.

The longer you RF the better, so get what you can. My kid would have been delighted to open a huge box with a car seat in it for his 2nd birthday!

Sorry I should have mentioned it is up to 18kg rear facing and then up to 36kg forward facing. We bought the joie stages group 0+, 1+2 took us a few goes to figure out how it all went but it's great. Thought DS would kick up a fuss being rear facing again but doesn't bother him at all.
