Receptionist who took the hoax phone call for Kate found dead!!

she had apparently been there 4 yrs, and was helping out on the desk answering phones in a positiion she normally wouldn't do, she transferred the call to Kates nurse who was then the one that gave out some information.............

My husband and I were discussing this yesterday, he made a good point, almost all of us have sniggered at seeing someone trip and do that funny run forward thing so they dont' fall over, its (somewhat sadly) a part of human nature to find some amusement in others minor misfortune. So if you saw that on the street, and stiffled a laugh, completely innocently, but that person noticed, and due to their own personal circumstances, decided that that 'humiliation' was the last straw and jumped in front of the next train... are you as the snigger'er, to blame for their death??

We live in countries where freedom of speech is important, valued, and allowed, where comedians make jokes about every situation, every type of person and people laugh, everyone complains that we are all living in countries that are too 'Big Brothered'. yet there are calls for more laws and rules and regulations - more Big Brothering - because of one inncident, tragic as it was, and yes, many lives have been changed forever, but this is one incident in a count of many thousands that have happened over the years with no where near the same outcome. People need to take a step back and stop always looking for someone to lay blame on, sometimes terribly tragic shitty things happen that could not have possibly been forseen.

The two are not really comparable, if someone has tripped that person over on purpose, i dont think anyone would laugh, they would be thinking what a nasty prick. So your scenario is missing a vital element, intent and a perp.... If that makes sense.

I believe in freedom of speech, and the dj's were not expecting to be put through and given information, it was supposed to be a comedy skit.... think of phone jacker... if people dont notice and object, the humor is lost, they were expecting uncomfortable and awkward conversations with people who were too embarrassed to tell them to get lost.

I think what they did was stupid! But this lady obviously had other issues, or was unable to handle pressure.... there were no winners in this situation.

Apparantly that Mel is seeking counselling because she wants to self harm.

No sympathy what so ever here!

I've been thinking a lot about this and possibly it's because I don't like these sort of pranks myself but when you prank a friend/family member you (presumably) know they will take it well or at least have the chance to do the same back

But with these pranks no thought or consideration has been put into how the person they are pranking will take it, will they find it funny? Because if they don't then everyone is laughing AT you and nowadays it will be around forever. Or if that person can handle the prank from a health point of view? What if they were scaring people and it turned out one had a heart condition?

They also have no say in the prank, it was done, we will make you look stupid/silly because we can, we will play it, it will be around on the Internet for years and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it and they certainly are not going to call you back (on air) and apologise, you have no say what so ever.

I'm another one who thinks too much about stuff that goes wrong in work, if that would have been me I would have been inconsolable and probably physically sick over it (I would have got over it) so if you had something else going on and now the world laughing at you I can definitely see how this would happen xxx

Completely agree  This is very different from a prank on a fried/family member --- some one you know and stand a chance at second guessing their reaction and therefore consequences

Has anyone seen this?

https://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepa...-prank-djs-devastated-but-dont-say-sorry.html

Don't know why it says they don't say sorry because they do and are really upset in the interviews

its just terrible for everyone involved. no winners here.

Anyone who is blaming the DJs needs to really wake up IMO. The call was clearly a prank (listen to the background noise.) The nurse was quite possibly already depressed/suicidal for all we know. It's really, really unfair to blame an Australian radio station for the death of a nurse somewhere else in the world who just happened to put a prank call through accidentally. The DJs are going to live with this on their consciences (not that they deserve to) for the rest of their lives and that's more than enough punishment. I'm not convinced the call had anything to do with the suicide either.

Really??

If this is true then it just goes to show that she obviously feels awful about the whole situation. I'm sure that she is sitting there wishing that she had never made that call.
While it may not have been funny and certainly irresponsible I really don't think that either of the DJ's deserve the crap that they have so far been given. All those jumping on the bandwagon calling them murderers, saying they have blood on their hands, calling them all kinds of names etc etc are in my opinion doing 10x worse than what them Dj's ever done. I'm pretty sure the call was never meant maliciously and they never in a million years dreamed of the consequences, to them it started as a Joke that has obviously gone terribly wrong. Yet those on this riducoulous bandwagon no exactly what their doing and are doing it with the intent to be malicious, to destroy yet more lives in a story that already has no winners.

I pretty much agree with everything Kota has said so far, just didn't really no how to word it myself.

I too also belive that this lady must have had other issues and feel so sorry for her family. At the same time though I do also feel sorry for the DJ's and really don't think they deserve all of what they are being put through, I'm sure they are feeling bad enough by themselves without the world thinking that they too have to have ago.

Not read all the replies...but this is just going way over the top. Yes, it was a stupid and disrespectful prank call to have made..but it seems like they just didn't think..not that 'not thinking' is a good excuse for your actions...you have to own them, whether you mean for the consequences to happen or not. Once the hospital were giving out information, they probably should have terminated the call.

However, the hospital should not have given out that information anyway. If a journalist uncovered breaches of security there would be uproar, but here everyone is blaming the djs for this..when if the hospital had just not given out the info, none of us would've even heard it.

The newspapers are despicable as well. They claim sympathy for this woman and her family, they continue to shame the radio presenters etc. when really it was through them that most of us even heard this story.

I do really feel for the woman and her family, they definitely do not deserve this, and it is odd especially as she wasn't even the one who gave any information out. But the media are continuing to make this worse for the family, you'd think they'd just leave them alone. The presenters have stepped down, the other nurse isn't facing any disciplinary action and the royal family are supporting the hospital. Maybe if the media would shut up about it, people could have just gone on with their lives and two children would still have a mother.

I agree with absolutely everything fantastica said! This story represents everything that is wrong with the media.

the woman must have had other serious problems in her life to commit suicide & the prank call just tipped her over the edge. still, it's very sad! :nope:

The same media who took the moral high ground shortly after the nurse's death are now hounding these presenters. There is absolutely no way anyone could have foreseen the death of that nurse but the current storm may well lead to an entirely foreseeable and preventable death(s). Media needs to move on to other news and stop fighting for column inches. Regulation really cannot come quick enough.

Sorry but its that type of public attitude thats pushed this whole thing this far.
Whether its taking the piss out of the nurse or getting at the djs its all the same, its what possibly led to a suicide in the first place.
Yet no one has learnt that they could be contributing to yet another suicide

Or from them kinds of comments even seems to care?? I actually think its so hypocrytical to be bashing the DJ's for a stupid prank that went to far yet making comments like that.

I wont apologise for holding the Djs partly responsible but I dont think they have deserved all the shit they have been pot though since

I don't think the DJ's should be vilified for the poor nurses death but I also think its unfair to presume she killed herself for 'other' reasons. I guess we'll never truly know but people deal with things very differently.

Example, my FIL only 2 months ago wrote a letter leaving all his money to MIL and basically was going to leave her. The reason! Because he'd googled Jimmy Saville (just as allegations were coming to light) and went onto a website about him when a pop up appeared pretending to be a notice from the MET police stating he (FIL) had just accessed child porn and he'd have to pay £500 for no action to be taken. This of course was a scam but my poor FIL is so gullible, thought he'd be arrested and never live down the shame. He literally was about to leave my MIL after 35 years of marriage because of it. Until we asked him why he wasn't eating etc then it all came out. The poor man was worried half to death.

My SIL last week said she was not going back to work because one of the kids on her unit called her a racist (not true of course). She works with vulnerable kids that have committed crimes. She was inconsolable. Not so much because she was being called a racist, but because she thought every kid on the unit (90) would believe it and she was terrified about what they might try to do to her. It took four hours of people trying to convince her everything would be ok and not to just walk out of her job.

My point is, in both of these situations I would have reacted very differently. Certainly wouldn't have left my husband over a con and would not let some little scrotes scare me at work. But that is ME! This poor nurse may well have felt humiliated and ashamed that she was duped. Maybe she thought se would lose her job, I'd probably think the queen would want to lock me in the tower! Well not quite but it's the Queen!

Both my FIL and SIL are stable people with no problems in life (that I know of). Both are just extremely sensitive people.

Regardless, it's a shame for all involved in this silly prank :(

I think it was a cry for help that went wrong. The reason I said this, is that it has been reported that her husband and children live in Bristol and she was living in W1 when she was working. So its quite likely that she phoned for help herself.

The same Radio station had a 14 year old girl on a lie detector test and she admitted she was raped :( again something done without malicious intent but actions have consequences.

Oh and if I was Kate's family I would be terrified of how far the media are willing to go.

I read that they found her after she failed to arrive for her shift at work.

I feel truly sorry for this woman, but I do feel once again the media are making an awful situation a million times worse! It was a stupid prank that has cost a woman her life, but I don't think the blame lays at the feet of the DJ's. Yes they should have stood back and really thought about their actions, as should the Radio stations CEO, and the legal department. I think this is a good example of why the press should be more regulated, I'm all for freedom of speech but the awful thing with the media is they do not know where to draw the line.

I'm hearing she left a suicide note, is this true?
