Recurrent Miscarriage Thread

Hi ladies, hope everyone is well.

I had my appointment to investigate my miscarriages on Friday. What a joke. The consultant I saw, took one look at me and wrote me off as overweight.
She's doing a blood test, once I get a copper coil fitted, to see if I have any clotting disorders, but it seems token, her only real advice was to lose weight.
Even though I lost all 3 babies, with the same partner at the same gestation, she still wants to put my weight as the main factor.

As much as the logical side of me knows that my weight cannot be the only reason & the circumstances of my losses seem to point towards an actually hormonal problem preventing development, I'm now crippled with guilt that my losses were my fault, if I'd been more healthy, my babies would be here

Broken - ignore her comments hun, i had 6 losses and with each pregnancy i gained half a stone, my consultant never told me to lose weight and i was knocking on 14st at my heaviest. Being overweight does not help but i wouldnt put that solely down to recurrent losses

Thankfully i dropped 3st in 9 months somehow (thyroid functioning properly i expect)

Was it a recurrent mc specialist that you seen or just a 'general' gynae that 'knows a bit' about mc

What is your bmi at the mo?

x

Broken, although being overweight does increase your miscarriage risk in general, I have never seen it listed anywhere as a reason for recurrent miscarriages. In general, more than three losses deserve to be investigated. Sometimes, things are found that explain weight issues or are exacerbated by extra weight but then they need to be treated. Your doctor is not following standard protocol and fat shaming is not acceptable. Yes, if you are overweight then losing some weight can help but you shouldn't be made to feel guilty. By the sound of it you did not cause your three losses. You need help.

What I would do is see whether I can see another doctor. In the meantime, get your GP to start on some of the generic testing such as day 3 and day 21 hormone tests (cheap!), full thyroid panel and if they have the means for it, clotting and lupus anticoagulant (expensive).
Having a scan could be helpful (you probably need a gynae to order one for you).
If all of that comes back negative then look into immune testing/treatment.

Thanks ladies for all your advice:hugs:

Hope - I can't believe they are still trying to cover this up - so pleased you are ttc again soon:hugs:

Broken - I have also put on weight - since recurrent m/cs so what was my first loss related too - I weighed exactly the same as when I fell pregnant with my first (14 years ago) so I also agree its B.S! Dr's don't know how to categorise us - so they say weight, age, etc :growlmad:

Ginny - Congrats hun - that does give us all hope! - I'm now into my fifth and final year of trying (7 m/cs) so if there is a rainbow for me - please come soon!:happydance:

DS - Good luck at your scan hun :hugs:

AFM - Finally finished a 50 day cycle - and yep it's kicking my butt! - I'm sure this month was anovulatory as was the last cycle - so now I have to convince the Dr to do a CD21 test (or 7DPO test) wish me luck:haha:

:hugs:

X

Broken that's awful and absolute crap. See someone else. :hugs:

Garfie, fingers crossed they do the 7dpo test x

Hello Ladies. So next week is my D-Day; I have an ultrasound scheduled on Jan 20th at 11 weeks 2 days, and I'm terrified that it won't go well. If it doesn't then it would be my 7th loss and I don't know if I'd be able to keep letting it happen. I'm posting it here because I'm not sure if I think it'll go good or not by gut instinct and I wanted to share with you ladies because you understand my feelings.

DSemcho- I'm so sorry that you have this scanxiety. I think it's hard not to feel that way after a loss. I hope that when you do have your scan everything is great in there. :hugs:

I'm so sorry that your appointment with the consultant was so unhelpful. Your weight is not the main factor for your losses and they were NOT your fault. I would consider finding another doctor, one who is more caring and actually wants to help you find the reasons for your losses. :hugs:

Hope - that's awful, I can't believe they are treating you so badly. You are so strong to cope with all this. I hope you get your rainbow soon :).

DSemcho - good luck for the ultrasound next week :), the waiting game is so tough.

Petitpas - I've never understood why intralipids are so expensive, I read somewhere that the formula itself is cheap...there are days when I get annoyed at the 'license to print money' treatment costs

It is really really cheap however UK consultants like to charge the earth. Its about £450 in the UK privately but if you can get a prescription then its about £20.00 for the fluid and £100.00 to get someone to administer it properly

It's $1000-1500 per session here, or at least that's what my doctor quoted me. It's ridiculous to have to pay so much when the formula is so cheap.

AFM- DH has suddenly had a change of heart and doesn't think we should do intralipids when we get preggo again, which is frustrating because I thought we were on the same page and now we're not. I get where he's coming from, I do...I just had a bunch of endo removed and he thinks we should try and see what happens if we get pregnant again, but I'm not sure I can deal with another loss if it's due to us just not doing the treatment...

If the endo was causing the losses, which is a possibility, then I should be able to carry a baby successfully now, but I can't really overlook the elevated NK cells levels. So, I'm in this weird place with him where I talk to him about it and he makes all sorts of excuses and basically says he doesn't buy into "the whole NK cells thing."

I'm hoping our appointment with the FS on Thursday changes his mind...but this whole situation is just so frustrating. ugh.

DB - ask for steroids instead, they should be way cheaper x

Broken, everyone else has given you helpful advice so just to say I'm sorry to hear that you've been made to feel responsible for your losses. By all means, try to get healthier but I agree that you should see someone else if you can who is actually interested in investigating the problem for you & not try to blame it on you. There certainly can be more problems with pregnancy for bigger ladies, but many larger girls have babies quite happily. Good luck :hugs:

Hope - thank you, that's really useful

Garfie - good luck with the doctor

DB - I'm sorry your partner is having second thoughts about the intralipids, I hope he comes to understand why you are reluctant to try again without treatment

Broken how dare they say such q thing?! Plenty of women of heavier weight have many children. And small women have rmc as well. Being overweight wouldn't cause rmc hon.
Afm I went to see the rms and he ran lots of labs. All normal. So his plan is for me to call when my period comes on. I start a prenatal, folate, baby aspirin and steroids. I'll take Clovis day 5-9. Day 11-13 get a soon to check for eggs. Inject with hug 36 hours later do an iui check progesterone one week later for a few weeks and then on soon gram. I'll start love box the day of iui. It was a lot to take on at once. Thankfully I know about all of this thanks to you all. Problem isy period is coming on as I type I think. And we would need to get a move on as we are moving in a few months and may lose our good insurance

Ooh, I love the idea of injecting a hug. I bet that one does the opposite of stinging! ;)

Florida are you starting steroids as soon as your period arrives ?

I'm supposed to I had to wait until today to see the doctor unfortunately I think my period is getting ready to start so either make a decision to start today or I'll wait another month

None of us here take steroids all the way through a cycle. They aren't a very nice drug at all so need to be kept to a minimum ideally....

We take them from ovulation and take a test a 10dpo. If positive test carry on to 12w, if negative stop immediately.

If you were to miscarry whilst on steroids you mustn't stop them immediately, you need to be weaned off

Xx

The nurse who called said from iui. They are going to call and clarify. For now it's baby aspirin prenatal and folate. Until day 5-9 then add clomid. And have a scan

I'm getting nervous now thank you for telling me she had it all wrong

I'm reconsidering already. The pharmacist is screaming you do know they are giving you lovenox! Lovenox?! It's a blood thinner! Is this for fertility?! You shouldn't be using this! Is it an off label use. This is only slightly embarrassing. Question - the doc said start mead when period starts. I had some spotting and blood when wiping should I wait to start? That was at 11 and 2. Nothing at all since. I don't want to mess up the cycle

I started pred and lov from bfp at 13 days past iui but I have no conditions that require it. If I had high nk cells or clotting issues id have started earlier. I heard day 1 of period is first blood

Which meds are you supposed to start from period?

I took aspirin, pregnancy vitamins, omega 3, 5mg folic acid and extra vitamin D all through my cycle.
From approximate ovulation I took prednisolone.
After definite ovulation (never before) I took progesterone.
From bfp I took lmwh (same as your lovenox, just a different brand).
Tell your pharmacist that the lovenox is for recurrent miscarriages (suspected clotting factor), not infertility. That should make more sense to them.

I explained it as I'm a nurse. He still wasn't satisfied and didn't give them to me. I don't need them yet so I'll deal with it later. I haven't been tested for nk cells. But I have had every other test and been treated for uroplasemea. I had more brown spotting today. So strange probably due to stress. I am going to ask the dr can I wait until first real blood to begin meds as I have always read spotting isn't considered day 1. I'm taking baby aspirin, prenatals, extra folic acid, and I take vitamin d and b12 on my own. I want to add omega 3. Then lovenox from iui. Progesterone after blood test. I will take pred. Took a pregnancy test just in case yesterday it was negative. Full blown fa should start tomorrow

I took steroids all through my cycle - 10mg and then increased dose to 20mg at bfp. First cycle I o on cd16 which is a few days late for me. Then next cycle was bfn then third cycle got bfp. I also started ckexane progesterone and aspirin from bfp
