refusing a toddler access to toilet in a shop...

All this faf they could avoid by having a customer toilet. :dohh:

Ive only worked in express's their not really big enough to warrant a toilet.

not everywhere is big enough for a public toilet and its not down to the shops to supply a toilet for incase someone needs it.

otherwise every shop would be filled with people just using the toilets

Sorry to sound like a knob but it really used to bother me that i got shouted at over this at work

i understand from your point of view as well, and i didnt mean every shop assistant was being a jobsworth, so sorry if it sounded as a dig at you, i know these companies have rules etc etc

but

there little kids, not long since they were babies, and they are just learning, i just think its awful that society has become so americanised in the sue sue sue and claim claim claim sense that it even necessitates having company procedure for a teeny tot using the toilet :(

i am not getting in to the debate, but just wanted to say i really feel for your lo :(
And also in Canada, most stores have at least one public toilet. Even most of the
smaller stores.

Aw :( What a mean assisstant. Our supermarkets have toilets and i remember i was bursting in homebase when pregnant and they let me sneak in theirs and use it lol.

That being said, if I was OP i'd of dropped everything and took her round the side of the building  Amelies weed outside many a time LOL

hey ladies - wow thank you for all your replies!!! did not mean to set off a mini debate lol!!!

as i said earlier i dont blame the shop assistant as she was so appologtic & felt really sorry for dd & was only doing her job, shes attually lovely & id hate for her to have got in trouble (local shop i see her most days!!)

It was a small shop - so prob not big enough for public loos. It was the company policy thing that narked me... as the lady above summed it up - what on earth has society come to when you cant even use the staff loo incase somebody gets sued... its sad really! :nope:

and to the lady that said about not cleaning it up - the assistant was litterally waiting next to dd with a bucket & mop the minute she'd started saying it was coming out!!

i will proberly start carrying a travel potty with me like someone mentioned (great idea thanks  (i wonder if they will empty it for me in their loo :haha: )

thanks again for everyone for replying :) x

its a toilet fgs ... i dont get why people make such a big deal, what, you'd rather them pee all over the floor and then have one of your staff (of whom you are paying) to mop it up?

everybody in the que was really annoyed that dd had not been allowed to goo pee in the loo, i know they have rules & regs they have to follow & not the staffs fault - but does anyone know why on earth they cant let the public pee in their loos in exceptional circumstances!?

mini rant over lol

I know this is annoying for you and the lo in that particular situation, but if they let all the toddlers pee in their restrooms, there might be a risk of getting infected in case one of them is ill. That's another problem besides the accidents that would not be covered by the shop's insurance I guess.

And if they let all the toddlers pee, then the old folks with their incontinence problems might come as well and want to pee.

If it's not a public toilet, then you cannot expect people to let you or your kid go pee there. I'm not sure if you wanted people to ring at your home because they need to pee and want to use your bathroom.

I work in an tesco express store (used to be a full time team leader), nobody other than staff are allowed or insured to use the toilets.
I have refused many many people, however i have never refused a toddler unless the 'big bosses' were in, or we were bringing in a delivery (we have a tiny tiny warehouse, infact it is the smallest warehouse in tescos, and i always escorted them to the toilet and back again, or had somebody else do it if i was busy. Knowing that if anything happened (box on head, trip, fall etc) would all be my resposibility.
IMO, an adult can hold on and wait.
But i am sorry your LO had an accident, just please dont blame in on the staff member, they were just doing their job. X

infected from a toddler peeing in a toilet? :saywhat: Its not like anyone is going to eat off the toilet lol

well, you don't know that it's not exactly necessary to literally eat from a toilet seat in order to get infected with, for example, salmonellae? There's a reason why many people don't really sit on public toilets but bend over backwards instead and then pee.

By limiting the access to a toilet in a work place you basically limit the risk of getting ill, yes, believe it or not. Otherwise we could all offer our bathrooms to strangers who come a long and can't find a public bathroom anywhere close by.

I understand that many of you here are shocked about the bad shop assitant not letting the cute little one use their bathroom. Maybe try to understand the worker's postition as well.

Aww bless her, she must have been so upset :hugs: When I was heavily pregnant a shop assistant let me use the toilets in the co-op toilets. Yes there is insurance but I am sure someone could go with her. I really think it depends on the staff member and their discretion x

I don't think thats the reason they dont let them use it. Whats the chance of catching samonella from a 2 year old off a public toilet, lol. think its more the child slipping or hurting themselves and the company being sued.

I dont get the whole arguement about insurance either, as a company you'd have public liability insurance, and as long as access to the toilet was authorised, then it wouldnt void the insurance.

Otherwise surely the rule would apply to delivery drivers and the likes?

With tesco, delivery drivers work for Tesco or are agency workers therefore are covered.
The public arnt covered due to them having to go thru staff areas. The public are covered when in the 'shopping' area.

Thanks, just strikes me as a little confusing, because if a member of staff authorised the access you would think it covered them iykwim?

I think it depends on the shop. Like, I know a girl who got sacked for letting a little girl with her mum to use the loos in a bookies. So some folks jobs could be at risk for allowing it.

Let's face it, most people would not do something if they had even the slightest inkling it might lose them their job - and they don't deserve to be called jobsworths for it.
