Retained palcenta?

Did anybody have this with their first?

Just wondering as im now pregnant with #2 and just wondering what the chances of it happening again are?

I had this because I had the injection, did you have the injection first time round? If you did I would probably not have it this time xx

Yes I did have the injection, though this time I'm not becaue I kinda thought that was the reason I had a retained placenta, also this time i think I will be waiting for the placenta to stop pulsating.

I had this the first time and have been told by my midwife that it means there is an increased chance of it happening a 2nd time, I had the injection twice and ended up with a manual removal.

I have an appointment with the consultant at 20 weeks too discuss a 'plan of action' for this birth too try reduce the risk of it happening again

I swear though they gave me the injection too soon and I know for a fact the umbilical cord was very short which I suspect made it difficult if things snapped shut too quick! Is there evidence to suggest that waiting until things stop pulsing helps?

I remember the MW wraping her hands around the cord an tugging at it, what a horrible experiance.

there is very strong evidence that allowing the cord to stop pulstating and the placenta to naturally detatch is better both for you and the baby if you dont cut the cord till its stopped pulstating as it allows all of babys blood that is cycling through the cord and placenta to get back to baby allowing baby maximum oxygen from that blood and antibodies and stuff. they can do all vital checks with baby still attached and even resusitate the baby if nessacary but having a delayed cord clamping reduces the need for resus on the baby in most cases.
theres lots to do to encourage the placenta to come naturally including nursing the baby to stimulate oxytocin and its normal for it to take upto an hour to come

Thanks, I wanted to wait and natulraly deliver the placenta this time but lat time i was pretty darn close to having a blood transfusion, so at I think maybe this time the choice may be take off me.

I had a retained placenta with my first also. I think the doctor rushed it though and just decided that it was easier to remove it than to wait an hour for things to happen by themselves. Not sure if they would have or not but still.....I like to think so! I had a manual removal too; holy painful!! I have a midwife this time around and asked her about it and she said there might be an increased chance of it happening again but because we don't know the exact reasons, it could have just been a one time thing. I plan on letting my body try to expel the placenta on its own this time and that means allowing more time.....no rush. An hour after the baby is born is still well within normal!

I had it this time (second) after stupidly having the injection which I blame entirely. For me it was a transfer to hospital for MRoP under spinal and overnight stay. Very disappointing. . Having it once does increase your chance if it happening again I think largely because it can scar your uterus which can then lead to a future placenta embedding too deeply. I would recommend going for a natural third stage and only having the injection if things haven't happened in an hour or two.

I had 3 over night stays, It was Horrible, I was on a ward on my own so didn't even have anyone to talk to or moan at hehehe

i had this happen to me the 2nd time. It was not nice at all. The midwife pulling on the cord was awful. I had to get back on the gas and air as the contractions were so painful but my cervix had closed again. I lost so much blood. I had to go to theatre, be put to sleep and ended up in the high dependency unit from the blood loss. 13 weeks after the birth i was still bleeding. Scan showed still placenta bits inside. yuk. They let them go in their own. I have no idea what to do this time round. I have not decided if i want a c - section this time. Still deciding. xx

saw the head midwife today (was for a debrief of last labour) and asked about the chances of a retained placenta a 2nd time, she couldn't tell me an exact statistic but said in her experience it was about 50/50, anyway I also asked about trying a natural 3rd stage this time (i had wanted this last time but due too delivery I didn't get the chance) and she said she would NOT recommend it at all, she said it would be too risky.

I plan on confirming all this with the consultant when I see her in 4 weeks

^ I would expect them to say that. Completely ignoring how many retained placentas are actually caused by the injection.

I went to my booking appt on wednesday and my MW said I would be stupid to have a natural 3rd staged, I said i'd rather my baby have the benifits of me waiting till its stoped pulsating than go through all that for nothing, so there not to happy with me but I've made my choice!
