Returning to work and baby won't take a bottle

I am having the same issue with my baby girl. She won't take any bottles or pacifiers. I want to try and get her to take a bottle so when she is old enough I can start giving her rice cereal mixed with BM at night so she sleeps better. I also want her to be able to take a paci so that she does not use me as one all day long and I can get some things done (she is not hungry she just loves to suckle).

What I have been doing is just buying different brands to try them. So far she has not taken 3 different brands of paci and 2 different brands of bottles. I hope we can find the right one soon. I was hoping the MAM ones we bought her would work but so far no luck.

I believe mixing cereal with milk is a choking hazard, you might want to check with a doctor before you do that.

Pacifiers are just hit and miss, some babies like them, some don't...we used one on occasion with DS, but he never really took to it. It only worked when I wasn't around (surprise!)...

Ummm no it's not..... Like I am really going to go overboard with the cereal. It's not like she will be 2 months old either. I always check with her doctor before I do anything.

It's generally not advised, but you do whatever you want with your child. I simply suggested you speak with your child's healthcare professional first (doctor, HV, etc). Why not just feed her cereal? Why put it with the milk so there is a possibility of aspiration?

Besides, it has been proven to NOT help them sleep longer, so why risk it?

There was no statistically significant trend or a consistent tendency of one group to have a higher proportion of sleepers than the other. Therefore, feeding infants rice cereal in the bottle before bedtime does not appear to make much difference in their sleeping through the night.

You are under the assumption that I don't talk to her healthcare provider, which is so far from the truth. You don't know me, and most of all you don't know my daughter. I am a great mother and I do everything I can to make sure my baby is happy and healthy. Please do not offer me parenting advice when I did not ask for it. Like you said, she is my child and I will do what I think is best for her.

Yes, your child, your choice :flower: I am sorry I offered what I viewed as kind and helpful advice, I guess you did not want any of that.

I never said I thought you were anything less than a great mother, defensive much?

what worked for me was letting my son play with an empty bottle. As babies do everything goes in his mouth so he just started sucking on the empty bottle and got used to it. After a few days he started to drink from the bottle no problem.

No you just implied it by assuming I don't talk to her pediatrician. I am sorry but when you open up with assumptions about me or my child then of course I am going to get defensive, especially if it's not true. Now I am done with this conversation.

OP, Sorry hun but I am going to unsub from this thread. There is lots of great suggestions to your problem and I hope one of them is the solution for you. Good luck!

Just suggestion, no assumptions. Perhaps you don't realize, people from various places on these boards don't see pediatricians ever, sometimes they see HVs, sometimes I have heard some people don't see anyone hardly ever. So I was making NO generalization based on your location, I didn't simply assume because you were US based that you had the same well child schedule as me or anyone else. I specifically avoided making any such assumptions and simply made a suggestion, never implying that you had not already. All you had go say was "thanks for the suggestion, but I already discussed it with her doctor"....not go into some defensive tirade. But whatever, you are flouncing out with an "I am done with this conversation", so its not like you even care about the truth.

This is a really good idea as I am having the same problem. My little boy is almost 6 months and he also will not take a bottle. Im so worried about leaving him when I eventually do have to return to work. He has also never had a dummy either as he would never take one. Im going to give this suggestion a go. Thank you. X

Hi ladies, little one will take a little milk from a tommee tipee first cup and coupled with being on 3 meals a day, hopefully this will be enough. Will be getting hubby to have a go at giving a bottle before bed this week while I go out of the way with DS to see if it's possible, if not I have agreed with my boss I can nip home and do bed time feed. I would rather her take the bottle as I can't say what will be happening at work at that time but at least it is a solution. I have had her weighed and will weigh again in a months time, so fingers crossed all will be well. Thanks for all your helpful posts
