Okay so I went to work the week before last, halfway through the week. First day at work, LO took 10.5 oz. I pumped 10.5 oz. Great! The next day though just over 10 and I was worried, although LO took a wee bit less anyway. That weekend he refused the breast quite a bit, so we went off the bottles we were using and tried cup feeding (didn't work, he kept bobbing his head at the cup trying to latch on!) and then switched to the Medela Calma, which he doesn't like but it definitely doesn't make it too easy or give him a preference for the bottle.
So then he went from taking 8 ounces, to 7, to 6, to 5.5. Now he takes between 5.5 and 6.5 ounces a day, and nurses all evening/all night (we cosleep, it's no trouble we sleep great).
So on the other hand, my pumping output has gone from 10 ounces to 12.5 per day (give or take). Generally they say your output is best at the beginning of the week after nursing the baby all week, and dwindles by Friday. Mine starts out lowest and goes to it's highest on Friday!
So anyway, I went from being worried about my supply to making more and more extra each day. I make roughly double what he needs each day, which also contributes to my oversupply and overactive let down issues when I AM with LO.
I currently pump 3x a day for 15-20 minutes. I have two options: Drop a pumping session and pump 2x/day for 20 minutes (which is NOTHING like how LO eats, he eats smaller amounts much more frequently) OR Stay at 3x/day (or add an extra) but only pump for 5-10 minutes, which more simulates LO's nursing pattern. I could also work on bringing up the supply in my low-producing breast and hope to cut down my oversupply/overactive let down high producer. (Like one session, pump both for 5 minutes, next session, just leftie for 5-10, then next both, etc)
Do you think it would be better to try and stick to LO's pattern and pump often but not as much? Or would it be better to just drop a pumping and continue to pump all the milk out each time?
