just wondering what age i should start giving semi skimmed rather then full fat?

Im just repeating what I read on here. Full fat until 2, or longer if lo has low weight issues.

they can have semi skimmed milk from 2 yrs, but full fat is best for along as possible.

Still giving full fat, don't see no need to switch. The difference in fat content is tiny anyway.

Children in the reception class in school (4 and 5 year olds) still get full fat milk provided for milk time. From year 1 (6 year olds) they are provided with semi skimmed.

Depends on the individual child's diet but they can have it from 2.

Ask your doctor... mine told me that I could use 1 percent once he was a year old since diabetes and obesity runs in all 4 grandparents. Apparently whole milk can't be that big of a deal. My son has been on 1 percent for 6 months.. and he's still a strong, healthy, vibrant, thunder legs toddler.

With that said, I see no problem with using whole milk either. It really depends on the toddler and I'm glad I asked my doctor.

In the us if your child is in a daycare that uses the food program they can't have whole milk after age 2 unless you have a drs note saying it's ok. I believe that rule came into affect a year ago?

Megan has been on 1% since age 2, when I was worried about her weight and had her back on whole for a while she ate even less food so I wonder if she was fuller on the whole milk?

Jordan is on whole milk unless I run out and can't get to the store right away. Her dr was ok with her being on whole, 2%, or 1% the past few months.

If your child's got a weight problem changing from full fat to semi skimmed is not going to make much difference, it's everything else their eating.

I agree with lozzy. If milk is meant to be such a small part of a toddlers diet, I can't see how full fat milk could make any difference?

Why bother switching? Fat is healthy for you. The idea that you should eat low-fat, comes from an old, faulty study.

Totally! I've been on a higher fat diet, not a fad one, just adding coconut oil and more meat and dairy to my diet, and I've lost weight. The most decent amount of weight I've ever lost in a reasonable period of time. I didn't cut things out, or calorie count.

My children have high fat everything. Granted we use a lot of coconut oil which has medium chain fatty acids rather than long chain...but Thomas has lost weight (15.9kg to 15.4kg over a year), our skin conditions have all improved immensly and my cholesterol has gone down. I've also gone from borderline diabetic to normal.

I don't even like cows milk all that much as a food source, so don't worry about getting low fat.

My oldest is 5 and he still gets full fat. It tastes nicest :)

We buy either semi-skimmed or full fat Cravendale (sometimes they don't have the blue, so I have to get semi. I mostly buy one of each lol) - I would always buy blue-top full fat but to be honest the fat content is the only thing that changes and the other nutrients stay the same. We drink lots of it too - it's not like it's rationed lol. But - my children are all big for their ages and they're not going to miss that 2% of fat - especially given the amount of milk they actually drink, and the other dairy we have in our diet.

I did stick with full fat with Earl until he was 2 though so I guess it's just whatever works for you

Recommended until the age of 2 but I won't be changing to semi skimmed unless she is gaining too much weight. I use full fat myself aswell but I don't have a huge amount and I'm not overweight.

We've had semi-skimmed since about 2/2.5 years. We just prefer it.
His nursery give semi-skimmed too.

cheers ladies. it jusy because i was trying to loose weight my self and only ever have enough room in my fridge for 1 milk carton.

he certainly dosent have weight issues and he eats lots of other dairy products.

i can keep using full fat of there not much difference.

If your child's got a weight problem changing from full fat to semi skimmed is not going to make much difference, it's everything else their eating.

I was worried about her being underweight around age 3 so tried switching her back to whole. I had switched her to 1% at age 2 which had nothing to do with her weight. At age 3, It just made her full, and yet she didn't like the taste anymore and didn't want to drink it. So she was drinking less milk and yet eating less food... So it wasn't going to help her gain any weight.

We have only just switched this last week actually. And that is because I have GD. Before then she wouldnt have much milk, none with her cereal etc. Now, she will have it all the time with cereal so she must prefer it.
