My LO is 9 months. She is at the stage that she is pulling herself up to standing, and she is cruising. She wants to be on her feet all the time.

She has never worn pram shoes or anything, but I'm worried about her standing on a stone or something when we are out and about, so I want shoes to put in her bag and just put on her when she's out of her pram outside.

We went to Clarks yesterday to get her measured, and she is too small for the foot measuring thing. They only do from size 2, we put some on her and they were significantly too big.

I don't want to buy rubbish shoes for her. I want something comfortable and durable. I also want someone to fit them properly.

What do I do?! She's probably roughly a size 1 but I cant find size 1 shoes anywhere. Surely other babies must have small feet!

Generally most good shoe stores won't recommend putting a non-walking baby in shoes, even the "cruisers" are more for babies in about the first month or 2 of actual walking, as putting them in shoes while they're cruising can delay walking. What we used to do is just put her in a double layer of socks and frankly just not to put her down anywhere she might step on glass or whatever. Even at our nursery, they put the cruising babies in two layers of socks with nappy bags in between all winter and it keeps their feet warm and dry even in like December. Honestly, I would do that. Shoes are expensive and there is no point having them unless you need them. Mine started cruising at 8 months and didn't walk and get proper shoes until 15 months, all of which was over winter and into spring. The double socks worked great all that time.

I never thought of double socks. I definitely don't want her in shoes all the time, its literally just for 10-15 minutes if she's toddling in a park when we are out with the dog. I don't want to spend a lot and I was hoping to get some in the Clarks sale, hence the urgency! They have some for around £10 which seemed reasonable to me.

We have a pair of these which are brill for doing the job you're after - they fold up small in the bag and I don't have to worry too much about DS outgrowing them

DS2 is taking 8-10 independent steps but I'm not considering shoes for a good few months, he juts doesn't need them yet and I've just spent a fortune on DS1 school shoes!

Those look perfect actually. Our house is quite cold (its an old house) and we have wooden floors which is really slippy for her when she has socks on, but (aside from this heatwave) its too cold to have her in bare feet. Those would be perfect for inside and outside! Now just to guess what size she would need ...

Now I feel like a bad mom! Isla is almost always barefoot on our stone floors inside (whilst I wear slippers!) and I let her cruise outside with bare feet. She has stepped on a stone before but other than losing her balance she didn't seem bothered by it. We don't plan on getting her proper shoes until she has been properly walking for a while.

It is pretty cold here from September.

Our garden is slabs, grass and red chips. The red chips get everywhere. When they go in the grass you cant see them. I have stood on a few and it really hurts! Plus, the slabs have uneven bits. It really all needs pulled up, but some parts are communal with our neighbour and they are pretty nonchalant about the garden so we would end up having to pay it all, and I cant afford that!

From memory they come in 0-6, 6-12, 12-18 & 18-24 mnt

We have 0-6 (another tiny footed one here) and they have plenty of life left in them - you cab try them on in toys r us if you have a local one?

Just an update, I took her into my local Clarks today and they took time to measure her properly and she is actually a 2e. I got some rubber soled sandals for her for £13! Really disappointed with the service in the other Clarks store!

Here's the shoes I got:
