The paperwork bit, if you were getting married elsewhere, do you just go to the registry office with your witnesses and do the signatures?

Does it have to be after the ceremony or can it be done before?

Nope you have to go to your local office give notice then you are free to marry where ever. you then ring where ever and book a date poss pay a deposit then turn up pay then get wed!!

Yeap, you go to the registry office to give notice of marriage, fill in some forms and pay the money, they then ask you where you are getting married and will you need the registrar to come out and lead the ceremony or do you have someone already, then once thats all done and sorted you jist get married and sign your paperwork at the cermony on the day

We gave notice today (had to do it in our own district even though we are getting married in a different district) and we had to tell them the name of the location and the date and time of the wedding. They took loads of details, took £60 and said our paperwork will be ready to collect on or after 10th March. This then has to be taken to the registry office where you intend to marry. She said if for any reasons the date changes, the notice will last until 22nd Feb 2011 and if it was rearranged for after that we'd have to give notice again. She also said the notice is only valid for that location :)

Yep, we had to call the Registrars office in Brighton and hold the time and date, then go to our local Registrars office to give notice. While we were there, our office called theirs to confirm we had done it.

Brighton then confirm the date and we need to drop the notices into them some point before the month leading up to the wedding. We pay them for the actual ceremony and paid locally for the notices.

The place where we are getting married is arranging the registrar, but we have made an appointment at the council offices to register our intention to marry, they then go though all our ID etc so we can have the marriage license thingy. :) x

You might find this helpful: https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/BirthDeathMarriage_Citizenship/Marriage/. Am guessing you'll be most likely getting married in Glasgow? ;)

In Scotland you can get married where ever you like, all you need to do is give notice to the district where you will be getting married. The minister/celebrant/registrar does the ceremony then afterwards you give the signed marriage certificate to the district council you get married in within 3 days of the wedding. xx

celebrant - whats that?

I think where im gonna make it complicated aswell is were not using a minister or a registrar to do the ceremony.

Ahhh, thats the route were going with :D

What did you do exactly? We were looking into getting married with a handfasting ceremony.

If you go on to the humanist society scotland webisite there's information on all the celebrants you can contact them and ask them questions about ceremonies they've performed before and meet up with them to talk about what kind of ceremony you want, some have pics of ceremonies they've done on hills and things (lovely) in Scotland they can legally marry you so you dont need anything from the registry office where you intend to get married except you have to give them your marriage notice and as long as no one says you shouldn't marry (which never happens) they give you an M10 I think which is the document you sign on your wedding day and this is co signed by the celebrant then you give it back to the registry office within 3 days of the wedding and they send you a printed copy of your wedding certificate! That's a brief explanation, if you want to ask me anything else PM me x
