My parents wanted to take my toddler for a few hours to spend some time with her. When I came to pick her up, I was told that she found a vitamin pill on the floor and had put it in her mouth. My mom had taken it out but said dd bit into it. It's a gel capsule. I looked at it and can clearly tell that she punctured it. Now I don't know if any got into her system, what exact vitamin pill it was and so on. I gave dd water and she's being her usual self running around and whatnot. I'm just so angry. Maybe I'm overreacting but I just can't help but feel that it was careless on their part

Do they not even know what kind of vitamin it was?? I'm no expert but I'm sure it was harmless, especially if she didn't actually ingest the whole thing.. Like I said though, I'm no expert so don't take my word for it! Maybe someone who knows a bit more about the whole thing will come along soon. That is a bit careless, I agree.. I think I'd be pretty pissed off!

Aww!! :hugs: It's definitely scary and totally horrific to hear that your little one was in a dangerous spot - especially when you are entrusting your child's care and wellbeing to another adult. No parent wants to be told their baby ate something they shouldnt have - especially something as quetionable as the alleged "vitamin".

However, I must say that even when I watch my daughter (18 months) like a hawk, she still manages to get ahold of tiny little things she shouldn't - and they occasionally end up in her mouth before I can take them out of her grasp. Like literally in less than a second she will be looking at an acorn in the yard and then boom she's put it in her mouth! And that's with me hovering over her and trying to intercept everything she explores!!! There just isn't always a guaranteed way to prevent that from happening! They're kids - things like this happen

If you feel like your parents were being especially negligent, then perhaps it's worth a serious chat and it might be better to have them just visit while you are around. However, if you feel that is was just an accident, I would just kindly advise them to keep a keen eye on her and what she picks up.

As scary as it can be, these things happen. They couldn't have been too negligent if they caught it before she was able to thoroughly chew on it even more. It's worth it to have a discussion with your parents about this, but try to be a bit more understanding. It happens even to the most observant parent.

Signed, a mom who turned her back for a couple minutes and whose older infant (10ish months) proceeded to indulge in a helping of dog poo years ago.

I have spoken to my mom and she does feel bad about it. I guess I was just more angry that they weren't sure what it was. She's pretty confident it was her vitamin d pill as she took one last night. I can't be too mad at them, these things happen. Mia had put things in her mouth around me.

I'm sorry but this made me burst out laughing!

More than likely, she'll be fine. I'd just hold off on offering her any vitamins she might take regularly for a few days, as some things like vitamin E and D are fat soluble, so the body doesn't flush them out easily if we take too much of them. It doesn't sound like she really ingested much or any, but if you want to be on the safe side. If it makes you feel better, my husband ate an entire box of flouride tablets as a child (like the kind people used to, maybe still do, give kids when they use their own well water that isn't flouridated). His mum said she found him in the bathroom frothing at the mouth with the empty box next to him! He was fine. They just watched him in case he had any negative effects and held off giving any more flouride for about a year! He has great teeth now though and has never had a cavity!

Do you still have the pill? If so and you really want to know what it is then just compare it with the pills your parents have in bottles. You should be able to match them up. I would guess that she will be fine seeing as though she didn't actually swallow the pill. Maybe have a talk with your parents and explain that you love for them to spend time with your kids and offer to help child proof before they stay unattended with them again.

As a baby, in no particular order, my brother ate:

A coin
Rabbit shit
Rat poison

I think the rat poison must have been worst for my parents, as it's a blood thinner and under no circumstance does anyone recommend that one eats it!!! My grandparents had a mouse and left a dish of it behind a chair. It looked like little blue rocks ... I guess my brother thought they were sweets.

Anyway, he was (and is) fine.
