Hello Ladies, i'm new to your forum and probably a slightly depressing kind of hello but i've gone into that really down mode!

I shouldn't keep looking on the net as the ttc after 40 reading is nothing short of depressing. Its seems apart from not bothering at all that my best best is lifestyle changes. Having been doing well so far in terms of no alcohol, caffeine, food etc. Been failing badly on the smoking front though which seems to affect fertility more that i realised, thought it was just lungs etc

I keep coming back to how come there are drug addicts etc out there who get pregnant (albeit they may not have the 'over 40 syndrome to deal with and that's not an excuse to avoid doing any lifestyle changes)

I have made an appointment to go to doc's for pre checkup etc but dreading that as there seems to be so much negative press i am expecting the worse in as much as he'll only tell me not to bother due to age regardless of whether I'm still fertile.

Are there any success stories of lifestyle changes and conception out there to give me a bit of a boost and incentive?

Many thanks

Hun i completely know where you are coming from , 1st of all dont look at those websites they are truly depressing and if we keep reading them and believe what they put no-one over 40 would have any babies. A lot of what they put are what they think will happen its not what happens.
Do you temp or do opk's if not give them a try. Stressing out is the killer higher than anything else hun . Dont worry about the smoking it it happen for you when you are ready and as for stressing out that is your biggest killer. Now ocme on give me a smile , stop worrying and enjoy your ttc journey , its not going to be easy but we are all here to support you. By the way im 43 and still ttc so you are not alone xx

I think the antidote is to look up websites of victorious women who have been successful over the age of 40! :)

Failing that, ignore all the crap. And also, you are right that many drug addicts and alcoholics get pg without trouble - i should know as i work with them!! And many get pg in the the sort of 'old' age bracket as well... so i think one just needs to take all of this with a grain of salt. (the only difference between us and them is they usually have soothing wrong with their babies...)

Ultimately, it only takes one egg and sperm to get it to work. Granted we may have less eggs but that only means (as i was told by the fertility specialist) that, if you are otherwise healthy, it may take you a little longer than a 25 year old.

Go and get a check up and i you don't get someone symathetic change dr.'s. The last thing you need it someone bringing you down - af does that on her own :)

Chin up, hun..you are not alone and those who keep fighting will sow the benefits, i believe. Oh and im 40, too and i live a relatively normal life and try not to restrict myself too much otherwise i WOULD go crazy, lol!

All the best, Omi xxx

Thank you ladies so much for the encouragment, its just what i need, a bit of pma! I even read today that you shouldn't use a computer prior to BD'ing as the heat from the mouse can kill sperm. Now that is bonkers?

I think maybe that's it a bit of moderation here and there, i can't ever imagine my mum went through all this to get us three?!!!

Thanks once again ladies, and good luck with your own journeys. x.

I am not over 40 but was 36 when I had the boys - I was very overweight my whole life and a 20 a day smoker - I lost 7stone in 2006 and gave up cigarettes in December 2008. Although I wasnt trying to conceive at all at this time. I stopped taking the pill on May 5th 2009 and got my BFP June 6th soooooooooooo after all that waffle there was nooo problem with my fertility at all and boy was I unhealthy for most of my adult life until the age of 35 - hth xx

Wow, georgeous boys.

I am so glad i posted ,it has been a real tonic. I am going off to bed feeling a whole lot better. Its amazing how just a few comments from real, normal people have got me back on track. I am barring myself from doing any research on the internet from now on, no more 'e-books' for me!

I done pretty ok tonight keeping of the cigs so quite pleased with that as a start, so see how we go.

Lets see what tommorow brings!!

Thanks again people and goodnight, x

I'm with the other ladies, stay away from those negative sites, and remember there are so many women 40+ having babies. You are right that the cigs have to go, so just start working on that now, I'm sure it will greatly improve your chances, just think, it will all be worth it when you are holding your little one. good luck and sending positive vibes your way.

My mum had her first child at 38 and second at 40 so it does happen they had given up trying adopted me and decided to give it another go came off birth control and 4 months later she was pregnant the second time she got pregnant after being ill she hadn't even stopped birth control. One of my best friends mum has just had a baby and shes 43 she didn't have IVF or anything it did take her over a year to concieve though.
