I'm going through the motions, applying for my maternity leave pay online. It seems like every time I turn around, something is stopping me from getting it done. I'll get 98% of the way through the registration form online and my computer will freeze, or the page will have an error. I'll call Service Canada and get different information from two different reps on the same topic. I went into the downtown office and was told it was the wrong office, went to the one they directed me to and was told to turn around and go back to the first office.
You would think that of all things, they would make collecting maternity wages a relatively pain free process. As if we don't have enough to worry about. I've got 21 days to get everything in order and I have to waddle from place to place, which takes forever and is exhausting. I don't have a car and don't have any money left to use public transit because this bureaucratic nightmare of a process is withholding my wages! I have $12 to last me for the next 5 weeks, unless I magically get a tax return but god knows I'll end up owing money there too.
The emotional part of being a single mom to be is hardly bothering me anymore. It's being overshadowed by the hoops of fire they're making me jump through just so I can afford to diaper my baby, let alone eat anything myself. I can tell you, it hurts my pride a little to have to ask my 19 year old sister for a loan.
