State, Private Or Home Schooling?

I would 1000% send Aymen to a private school if the plan to move to Morocco permanently pans out, private schools there are not as ghastly priced as here and he'd need the extra assistance as his first language wont be Arabic.

I disagree with the existance of private schools tbh. You pay for private schools so they are better right? Well for private to be better then state has to be worse. If everyone who was so willing to pump tons of money into private education pumped it into public education instead then state school would be the highest standard for everybody. State schools wouldnt lose the best teachers to private and teachers could afford to be paid a little more. Tbh imo i would abolish private education and just introduce a surplus tax on high earners of 1/2% purely for schools - it would be less than a lot of them spend on private school anyway and it would create a much fairer schooling system. Education is important and the best shouldnt just be reserved for those with the most dosh in their pockets x

 Great post, I totally agree.

Ideally I would like to send Thomas to a private secondary school. My husband works in a good one at the moment and so long as he stays there, we will get a 40% discount off the fees which might make it affordable. I would be happy to send him to our local state primary however.

I have worked in two 'outstanding' secondary schools myself and don't feel that either of them compare to the opportunities available in the private sector where classes are half the size, behaviour management is not a problem and the extra curricular activities are incredible. In my husband's school, their GCSE pass rate is 100% A-C and they are aiming to improve this to 100% A-B. Other than grammar schools, I don't think these figures would ever be achieved in the state sector. Morally, I am opposed to the idea of private schools and I think it is very sad that money should be able to buy you a better education for your child. However, unless things improve in the state sector, when it comes to my own son's wellbeing, I will happily put my morals to one side.

I agree with a lot of what you say in your post apart from this bit:

State schools wouldnt lose the best teachers to private

In my experience, private schools do not have the best teachers. I have worked with some fantastic teachers in the state sector and I know of plenty of terrible teachers in the private sector.

I think that any school, state or private will have its mix of good and bad teachers. The difference is that teachers in private schools are teaching much smaller classes and do not have to deal with the same problems that state sector teachers do which enables them to focus more on their teaching.

Are teachers in state and private paid drastically differently, does anyone know?

Fantastic post!!

We're hoping OH will have had sufficient pay rise to send our kids to a private school. I went to both kids as a kid and personally I think the private ones are better but only really because the smaller class sizes mean than the teachers can spend more one on one time with each child. I also found that in the private schools they cared much more about how well you were doing and if you were not at a certain level they made you put in the effort until you were, at public school I was just left to get on with it.

Obviously some public schools are better than others and you have to 'shop around' to get the best ones. If we dont have the money for private school we will have no problems with sending LO to a public school xxx

I dont really agree with the idealist notion of putting money into public education so everyone gets the same high standard. You could preety much say that about anything in life. By that same logic, you are taking away freedom of choice.

I think it is normally about £4000 more in the private sector for the same job plus longer holidays but the school day is longer.

I find it quite sad and actually ignorant that people assume that children that are privately educated automatically become snobbish, or in a 'bubble'. It just goes to show how much people don't know about private schools. I think sometimes people are actually quite jealous (i am not insinuating anyone here is jealous before anyone starts, BUT sometimes in 'real life' that's the reaction i get as people automatically seem to dismiss private education.)

I think that children will do the best they can in whatever school they are in. Nobody actually said that private schools are better in any way. I don't think they are 'better' just because i will be paying for it. They are not better than each other, they BOTH have their pro's and con's. I don't think it would be fair of me to say that children that go to state schools will have a shitty education because of huge classes or because of this and that, but it just isn't true. You cannot tar every school with the same brush. There's good in bad in ALL schools, smoking & drugs in all schools (predominantly private schools as the children are wealthy), plenty of good and bad going on everywhere.

Nobody should actually be bashing either side when they don't even know what they are talking about. Not everyone that goes to private school is a snobbish, up themselves arsehole who is better than anyone else. You get plenty of people that go to private school (like for me example, that actually rebel and don't get much out it - and that's down to my personality, i would have probably done the same in a s state school). However my brother is an ambitious hardworking soul who has done fabulously well in private education, BUT would have also done the same in a state school). My Dad grew up on one of the roughest shittiest council estates in Britain and went to really dreadful schools, never passed any exams, failed his 11+ but still worked damn hard and now writes software for Bill Gates. See, it's about personality & ambition, NOT school.

Our reasons simply are; smaller class size, more one-to-one attention, a say in what goes on, well-maintained and looked after school, excellent books and learning materials as the parent is paying for it all, and usually they do go to university - even the rebels! All round we just feel it's right for us, doesn't mean i think any child that goes to state school is a piece of shit and that Leni & I are better than them.

Anyway, what i am trying to say is; nobody said either school was better or worse than the another and nobody should be tarring anyone with the same brush. Kids that go to private school aren't snobby and better than everyone else, and kids that go to state schools are not under-privileged and will never go to University and fail.

Exactly. Alll of OH's friends are from similar very expensive schools...like ST Pauls, Harrow etc. And they aren't snobby shits at all! OH is a little bit snobby...but all his friends aren't. Most of them are SO well mannered and know alot about the world around them. They do things like voluntary charity work around the world and go travelling to learn more about others cultures, genuinely because they're interested and yes, they can afford to go travelling! They aren't all in their own little "david cameron" bubbles at all and it's quite insulting to them to say that "public school boys are all snobs".
Yes I think there is a bit of jealousy...not neccessarily everyone here...but there definitely IS jealousy...

I reckon jealousy is a major factor and a lot of ignorance. I actually think deep down if people did have the money alot of parents would send their children to private school!

we are planning to homeschool Isla. Me and hubby feel well-equipped to do this. If this is done in a well-planned and organised manner than it works really well. Half the time children spend in school isn't taken up learning - they can learn what they learn in school in a day in a couple of hours at home.

If for some reason this doesn't work out we'd want her to go to a private school though.

aob - I dont get why all your posts have to start some kind of warfare between people, ive noticed it in alot of threads.

Nobody said that they are ALL 'snobbish', they were mentioning the kids in there local area's, if someone did say this, then i must have missed it and i apologise on there behalf, but seriously, tone down the hostility!

Then use the report button?

Just because i do not sugar coat everything or write lots of kisses at the end, doesn't mean i am being hostile. I say it like it is, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's posts like yours, that actually start it off.

I'm quite happy with what i said, as many people agree with me. So, it can't just be me thinking it. I just have the balls to say what others don't, i'm proud of that

I don't think that everyone that goes to private school is in a bubble. Just the young boys that I have to listen to on a daily basis on the bus. I did say that I don't think that is typical of all private school people.

I defo agree that some people are probably jealous. Usually people who have a chip on their shoulder. I know some people I went to school with had major problems with me moving away from the town I grew up in. They thought I thought I was too good for it. Lol - I just wanted to move away so I could experience living elsewhere!

A friend of mine lived in SA and was sent to boarding school in the UK as apparently the education system wasn't great where she lived. I feel sorry for her though, as she only saw her parents a few times a year. The school I went to wasn't great but I liked it and am glad it was only a 5 minute walk away and I got to see my parents everyday. I can defo say that means more to me than if I had been sent away to a school that had more opportunities. People are different though....

Trust me, it is no jealousy at all. I just feel very strongly about my child not growing up to be a snob and I think that is much more likely to happen if she goes to a private school and grows up only knowing people as privileged as she is! To assume that it is jealousy is completely misunderstanding our reasoning behind being against private schools, not everything is about money.
