I had no idea oats were linked to an increase in breast milk. I've always eaten a lot of old fashioned oats, but recently I switched to steel cut. Oh my goodness! I've always had a good supply, but all the sudden I'm overflowing again! A couple times I've leaked all the way through breast pads, and that's without missing a feeding. Started doing a little reading and realized that my breakfast oatmeal is the cause of my abundent milk supply.
I'm going to include my breakfast recipe in case it can help anyone.
For 4 generous servings:
Boil 4 cups of water with 1 cup of steel cut oats for one minute then turn off the heat, cover the pot, and allow the oats to soak overnight.
In the morning temper 3 eggs with 1/4 cup of hot milk and then stir them into the oatmeal while it reheats. After 5-10 minutes the mixture becomes rich and custardy. Serve with organic, whole milk.
Sometimes I include vanilla, rasians, diced apple, cinnamon, or maple sugar.
It's a quick way of packing a lot of nutrition into my family before they head out the door in the morning. And the protein from the eggs, the fat from the whole milk, and the lactogenic oats seem to make a magic, milk-producing concoction!
