I have heard you don't have to sterilise bowls etc even if you wean before 6 months. Is this true? It seems odd that you have to sterilise bottles but not bowls and spoons...
It's important to keep sterilising bottles until LO stops using them because bacteria from the milk can build up in the teats and rings. This bacteria can be much more harmful than anything caught from not sterilising bowls etc or from LO picking things up and putting them in the mouth xx
I was advised to sterilise bottles at all times and to just put spoons bowls etc in the dishwasher , although they did say at weaning class that after six month you no longer have to sterilise the bowls and spoons as they can pick things from the floor and out into mouth
I was advised that after 6 months its not necessary to sterilise anything other than bottles (HV and Sure Start post nateal group). Also you can give tap water for drinking after 6 months too and not cooled boiled water.
Ive always been told to sterilise bottles until they stop using them as like bigbetty said they can produce a really harmful bacteria. With bowls and spoons i sterilised in the first 2 months and then stopped. Its perfectly safe to wash them in a bowl of hot soapy water.
