Please don't think I'm mad but I can't seem to explain myself to my husband and he just thinks I'm being strange!

When you make up a 7oz bottle, you pour 7oz of water in first and add 7 scoops of powder. But then, when it's mixed and settled it is up to the 8oz line. Does this mean it is an 8oz bottle now! Does that make any sense???! Because when I give my LO a bottle and there's 2oz left in bottom, I've been saying "she's had 5oz" whereas actually she has had 6oz..:headspin:

I know it doesn't really matter, but I'm one of those people who likes to know what she's had and am getting myself confused now! :headspin:

Thanks!

looooooooool. If u keep the bottle to settle after preparing it, it will go 1/2 oz below the 8 oz line. When she leaves 2 oz in the bottle, it would be around 1.8 oz. It doesnt really matter as the fraction is not that big. For me, if Omar leaves 2 oz frm 7 oz bottle, I consider he took 5 oz & left 2. I dont count the fraction xx

lol you're not going mad I've noticed and wondered this too! :haha::wacko:

How does that work if you have a carton? If you measure 8oz is that technically 7.5ozs?

I think its more when u shake the bottle up and it froths (if that makes sense).

Hi, no it's still 8oz when it's been standing for a while in the fridge (I make mine up in advance - no comments please!). I guess it's the volume of the powder plus the water.. but just wondered how that worked when calculating what they're drinking..

You see what I mean about being confused    !!
:flower:

Its still a 7oz bottle :)

You've still made up a 7oz bottle, as that refers to how much water there was, and how many scoops you've put in.

However there are 8oz of fluid there, so if your LO totally drains the bottle, then they've had 8oz of liquid. The volume of the powder + the volume of the water = an ounce more (usually) than the water on its own. And just because it was 7oz of water to begin with, doesn't mean that the resulting extra ounce just doesn't exist or doesn't count :)

At least, that's according to my HV! She understands that if I say my LO is taking 7oz bottles, that means there's 8oz in the bottle.

Well I thought I knew the answer to that but now I'm totally confused too.

If I make a bottle up with 7oz of water and 7 scoops of formula I call it a 7oz bottle.

Thankyou! That does make sense and kind of what I was thinking.. I just needed it explained by someone else!

You're welcome! It took me a while to get my head around it too

loooooooooool. i love this thread

It's mad I know! When I started FF I didn't think it would be this confusing. It's great to air my confusion on here though and not be laughed at.... too much! LOL :haha:
:hugs:

I used to think DH was adding an extra oz as he loves overfeeding our LO. looooooool. Never thought adding formula to water will make it 1 oz more

Hmmmm, my hv said you put in the powder first (however many scoops for the feed you're making) in this case 7 scoops, and then pour in the water to take it up to the required amount so it's on the line at 7oz. Stir the water and powder together, add more water if required to ensure it's at the line, and then add the teat & lid, shake etc. So then it would be an exact 7oz feed. So that's how I've always done it :)

i go by the volume of liquid she's had - i.e when i make a "5oz" bottle which has 6oz of liquid in, and she leaves 2oz, i say she's had 4oz. to avoid confusion in our house, we refer to it as a "5 scooper!" lol

i question your hv :nope:

I agree with Suzib. If you read the instructions on the side of the box, it's always about adding the powder to the required amount of water. The powder has to dissolve in a certain amount of water to make the formula the correct "strength" - if that makes sense! So 7 scoops of powder requires 7oz of water to make it neither too concentrated nor too dilute.

I was specifically warned by my HV to make sure we never added "extra" scoops, as apparently some people do this to try and "bulk" out the milk to make their baby gain faster or sleep better. She said it can cause digestive problems etc if the formula is too concentrated.
