Stop been so cheap!

Im afraid I dont agree with the OP and do agree with several ladies on here - pregnancy is normal - its not an illness. We get 2 scans which are deemed necessary. We get access immediately to midwifes, doctors, consultants and other health care professionals and we get it whether we have spent 20 years paying for it through the tax system or if we havent paid a penny yet in our lives.

The NHS is a national health service - its isnt there just to alleviate us because we want to see our babies more or because we get anxious for no good reason. Its there when we need it to be - when we have recurrent miscarriages to help find out whats wrong, to make sure the Mums who need the extra support get the scans they NEED - such as a colleague of mine who is having weekly scans because she has twins on a single placenta and one of them isnt growing properly - she is closely monitored because she needs to be.

The NHS is finite - personally id like the money to be available so that my Dad could have the operation to remove his bladder to get rid of his recurrent cancer rather than to give me unnecessary scans all the way through a healthy pregnancy.

Mizze I absolutely agree with you x

How on earth do you think our Mums and Grandmothers coped ? My mum didn't get scans in any of her pregnancies. Ladies years ago only had the expertise of the doctors and the midwives to reassure them throughout their pregnancies.

I think considering people in the UK get free healthcare it's not unreasonable to expect the minimum number if scans for a healthy pregnancy. If your m/w or Dr has concerns then yeah, you'll have more.

I get more over here (probably 4 over all) but I pay a small cost for each as they are subsadised, not free. And even here most normal pregnancies only get 2 may be 3 as that's all that really needed in most cases. M/w are damn good at working out size etc

I'm not saying the NHS is perfect, cos it's very definitley not, but is a good enough system, look what you DO get for free, I think it's great they provide free appts, scans, free dental care etc.

i am a huge fan of the nhs - i have a great deal of respect for our healthcare system and am grateful to live in a country which provides the level of care which we receive. however, i don't agree when anyone says we receive this for "free" - it's never been free.

OP - would you agree to an increase in tax to fund these additional scans?!

no i wouldnt... i believe we pay enough tax as it is and in my personal experience and opinion i dont think the health care we recieve is worth what we pay! ...

there will always be room for improvement within the nhs and when it comes to tax allocation - but i think to offer additional scans is just unnecessary - and would only contribute to unnecessary spending.

afterall, fundal height measurements/doppler checks/movement monitoring is enough care for the majority of pregnancies - so to consider sending all of those women for an extra 8 scans, costing goodness knows how much, when they weren't needed just seems like a crazy waste of money to me.

I'm afraid I have to agree with the ladies who say it's unnecessary to have more scans. I do understand why people want more, but unless you're high risk or there's complications, I really don't see why you would need them. Where I live, there's the 12 week NT scan (which is optional) and the 20 week scan - that's it. Sometimes people get growth scans (I got one), but it doesn't happen very often. I think there are more important things the cost of the extra scans could go towards.

I dont think you understand what i am fully meaning... its not that i feel we should have more scans just to see the baby or because were worried... my point was, what is the point in fundal height measuring when it is so inaccurate! why put people through the worry that their baby isint growing correctly when these inaccurate measurments only end in a growth scan anyways!... it seems silly... i think you should have a scan when you find out your pregnant... at 14weeks to confirm everything is ok ... the annomoly scan and atleast another towards the end to make sure there is no issue such as the cord around babys neck!

I do agree with you that this is a natural thing and not an illness but i still believe that the NHS has everything back to front... for eg why is it people who purposly cause an illness through a lack of caring for their health i.e cancer through smoking or liver disease through drinking should be entitled to free health care?

Then you have either not had the need for the NHS from more of a basic point of view or you have and the "service" was so poor you really should consider going private!

Deductions and taxation does not all go to the NHS you know!

i know this but a cut of it does go to the NHS so i expect to recieve the health care i pay for... which 2bh i never have... i go to the doctors they can never be arsed ... then i find something potentialy serious through the nhs general neglect! i have complained 3 times due to my health care maybe its just were i am but it is pathetic 2bh

Growth scans are notoriously inaccurate as well.

I think every practice in the US is different. I've had 6 scans now and have a normal pregnancy. It was like that during my last pregnancy too. My first pregnancy, I only had 4 or 5 and saw a midwife. Not sure if that made any difference but now that I see a doctor I get more ultrasounds (3D ultrasounds!!)

I get one more scan at 34 weeks and then possibly at 39 or 40

agreed, its different where you are...here for an uncomplicated pregnancy you only get 1 scan. Buuut, I had complications so my dr ordered 4 (1 at 18 wks for measuring the baby and the other 3 during wks 35, 36, and 37 to keep check on my placenta bc it was mature), but I have friends in high places so I ended up having 12 total lol (8 sneaky peeks but with purpose, the first 3 were to keep making sure the heartbeat was there bc I lost a baby before Haley and was paranoid, then the 4 after that were to try and find out the sex bc she kept sitting on her feet, then the last one was a EFW at like 34 wks)

i think you're getting into dangerous territory there.

god forbid either mine or your child grew up to be an alcoholic or a smoker and got cancer, but if that happened, would you be pleased if our country turned around and said "sorry, it's your own fault, you're on your own"?

nah i never said that they shouldnt recieve help ... i believe they should have to pay for it though... my personal opinion

You have changed COMPLETELY what your OP states?!

This is the most ridiculous statement!
1) I doubt that ANY smokers or drinkers purposely caused any related illness!
2) I am also sure the majority of them will have paid just as much into the NHS system as the rest of us. Would you like to extend this to teen mums who have never paid any NI or people who have lived on benefits all their lives?
3) The whole point of the NHS and its motto is "healthcare for all regardless of income, free at the point of use" and not "lets let a chap with a degree or management qualification play God and make decisions with peoples lives"!!!

im not in 3rd tri but i thank the uk for wot we get !!!!! if u were bleeding in ur pregnancy/had mc's etc u wud get extra scans / care why wud u need them if ur pregnancy was going fine ?

buy a doppler? pay for a private scan ?

i think the nhs are grt and we shud be sooo grtful 4 it !

nah i never said that they shouldnt recieve help ... i believe they should have to pay for it though... my personal opinion

and you'd still feel like that if it was your child? what if they were unemployed, or in debt, and couldn't afford it? tough luck?

and again i have never once mentioned anything about having scans when your babys fine...this post is going way off the point... i meant why continue measuring peoples fundal heights as 2-3cms out and not offer them a scan! i proberly didnt write it too well

But as you've been saying, we all pay towards our health care. Where on earth would we draw the line?! You cannot alwasy prove the cause of a disease, smoking may be a likely cause but non-smokers also get cancer! What about people who have the odd cig on a night out? Have you ever tried smoking? surely the cig you tried could have contributed to your risk of cancer so you should not be allowed treatment then, yeah? Or how about if you were to get any problems with your liver, you have consumed alcohol in the oast yeah? well that may or may not have contributed to that disease so therefore you should pay the entire bill based on that. What a ridiculous notion!!

the debate wasn't about entitlement to the nhs in the first place - but you brought it up, i was only questioning what you said.

It is on topic as it is completely relevant to what you said, it was in response to what you said, therefore its on topic.
If those ideas were brought in as you suggest they should be, then they would apply to everyone wouldnt they? Including your child/ren. When you start to see people as someones wife, mother, sister etc you start to realise that in a civilised society it would be unethical and absurd to limit health care.
