Hi Ladies,

Well tomorrow I will start Abigail on formula, I didnt actually have any problems breastfeeding her as she latched on fine e.t.c and she was gaining weight fast but I have started to get physical problems because of it and I have been trying to ignore it for a week and these last two days I have started to dread feeds. I have had plugged milk ducts, thrush in breasts which have caused electric shock pains and now my knees and joints are clicking and I feel really weak which is probably due to my calcium reserves being depleted. All in all, I am fatigued and not feeling great despite me having a good diet, and drinking loads of water.

I feel a bit of a failure in this respect as I did try for a month exclusively but I am also wondering if I will ever get anything done if I continue to breastfeed. I am studying at the moment, as I hope to go to uni next year and the constant feeding means I will never get my home work done. I feel like a bad mummy for saying that..I have spent the whole day thinking about it and I know its the right choice I just feel really rubbish about it though. I tried my best..but I never leave the couch and its got a bit too much for me as I am generally quite active.....

Anyway, my fiance went out and bought some Aptimil. How do you ladies make up your bottles? It says to do it as and when, but if we wait until she wakes up before boiling kettles e.t.c Abigail will scream the place down? I think I read on another thread, that some of you boil the water and put in bottles and then just scoop the powder in as and when you need them. Is that how most of you do it, or do you do it the proper way?

Sorry for the long essay....

xx

Hey honey, you did good for Bf for a month! dont put yourself down :)
We use Aptamil too, although have just moved over to the hungry baby one.
To make the bottles i find it easier to do as follows:
Boil kettle while steralising stuff
Pour 2 oz (Jaiden has 4 oz per feed) of the water after cooling for 20 mins into each bottle
scoop 4 scoops of Formula into the holder things and put them all together
Leave on the side until he wants them.

Then when he wants them, boil kettle and add the last 2 oz, put in formula, shake and cool under tap if needed (depending how warm your bubs likes it)

Hth

Thank you my love, Jaiden is beautiful! How are you anyway? I have hardly had the chance to come online..thanks for the advice on how to do the bottles. Yeah I feel well guilty about stopping, but I just cant do it anymore. I never thought it was possible to get thrush in your boobs but it is so painful.

Does anyone know how long it takes before your milk dries up in your boobs, because at the moment they look like they are about to explode..

Awww thanks honey! were good, just getting thinking about routines lol
Dont feel guilty, youve done an excellent job!
And the milk part, mines mostly dried just a few trickles here and there so id say by 10 days my lovely! xxx

dont feel bad. i managed to bf exclusivly for 8 weeks but in the end i had to move onto formula. thats how i make them up. my LO likes her milk slightly warmed so i make up a bottle and then put it in a jug of hot water for 20 secs and it gets to the right temperature for her

ooh hun I know exactly how you are feeling! I have been having issues since day 1 breastfeeding and it is so freaking painful I am ready to pack in too! Because she is so big I was feeding CONSTANTLY and the burning and pain was so bad I couldn't put her on at all. We have been topping with aptmil too and though I am having some issues with guilt I know it is the best thing for Reagan and me. I am expressing every other feed at the moment and trying to breastfeeding one side every other time and topping up with formula. But it is exhausting! Reagan is taking about 3oz per feed right now but all baby's are different. Midwife told me to start with 2 or 3oz and then if she was still hungry to give another ounce and keep doing that to establish the amount she needs. I don't premake bottles I make them as needed. Aptimil is easy 1 scoop per ounce. Hope you feel better hun don't feel bad you are being a fantastic mommy by doing what is best for you and your daughter. And she is just as loved and cherished as any other baby! Give me a call sometime if you get a chance and we can chat about it if you want because I know exactly how you are feeling right now! Lots of hugs and love. xx

Hello hunny dont worry i`m giving up breastfeeding to as from yesterday as it was taking over 2 hours each time and morgan was still hungry he wouldnt go down hardly and it was just constant.I have been combination feading with formula once a day for about 2 weeks now so he`s used to the bottle he loves the bottle he`s soo content after it and goes straight down and sleeps for over 1 hour now yey,My boobs are engorged and killing and lumpy i was hoping it doesnt last too long for my milk to dry up.We have done well in giving our babies a good start with breastfeeding.
Hope your well xx

oh ya and we don't use boiled water we use warm tap water and she is ok I just cannot wait a half an hour with her screaming her little head off and I don't feel comfortable pre making the bottles (especially with the price of formula!!) hope I don't get told off for that piece of advice!

I'm from Canada (eh =D) and I don't know if things are the same or what, but I feed my *very* hungry little man Nestle Good Start concentrated formula (just add water). I always pre-make three 4oz bottles and leave them in the fridge. I use unboiled tap water, I always have. He likes his formula cold and won't take it warm . He is doing absolutely wonderfully , way ahead of all my friends babies :happydance: I think you should use your judgement :flower: HTH.

BTW - don't feel bad, you are doing an EXCELLENT job , it is important to have a happy and healthy momma to look after baby. Feel confident and happy about your choice to do whats best for you both. Good for you - studying and a new mum. Not an easy thing to do. :hugs: Good luck in your studies.

Thank you all ladies for your replies.

Much appreciated, I have decided to give the breastfeeding another go but I wont put pressure on myself if it dont work out.

Abigail was not settled last night, I tried her on a bottle of formula and she didnt like it at all.

I will see how I go, thanks again for taking the time to reply everyone xx

sorry Mrs. A I think I just went a bit on the defensive yesterday
