My son will be a year old in 16 days :)cry:) and we are trying to wean off of formula. How do we go about this? He eats his food normally but will not drink any sort of juice, he can not have any cows milk or soy due to allergy, and will not drink out of a sippy cup. He will drink out of a regular cup but due to the mess it sometimes causes we only give him water in it. We are not so concerned with getting him off the bottle at the moment but the formula.

This is what I have been doing the last three days..weve tried rice and coconut milk in past and its a no go with him but he does drink almond milk. Ive been making his bottles as normal minus the water add the almond milk (so 6 ozs almond milk 3 scoops formula) once this can is gone im going to do two scoops formula then one scoop formula then hopefully none! Anyone had success with this method? At this point in time he wont drink the almond milk alone so having it taste a little like his formula is helping.

There is formula for babys over 12months.....Check your local stores :)

I have but since he has the protein allergy he cant have any toddler formula they have here because its only soy or milk based. I can order some offline but we'd rather just use things on hand

I've known people who used a similar method of mixing formula with the milk and gradually decreasing it until the baby was taking milk(though I think that they mixed the scoops with water so made a few ounces of formula and than added the milk into that) . Good luck!

is there any reason why you cant stay on your current formula for longer? maybe your GP or MW will be able to help you transition to a suitable milk substitute?

Mostly because it doesn't have essential nutrients for toddlers it's recommended birth to 12 months I'm sure using it longer wouldn't hurt too much but at $25 a can and him drinking only formula is getting horribly expensive especially since I'm due with baby November. I can't cook with the formula either so I have to find a substitute for that as well. So far the almond milk is doing well.

Have you introduced any cows milk recently? Just in cooking, not like whole bottles of it. Cows milk protein intolerance can be challenged regularly and you never know, one time he might be ok! My DD could tolerate small amounts of dairy from about 9 months (milk in mashed potatoes etc) and then could finally have cups of cows milk from 15 months. He might be ok in the next few months so i would just keep giving the formula for now to stop confusion if you have to change again. It will likely have more nutrients in it than almond milk will.

If you do want to switch though, make the formula as normal with water but only 4oz or something, then do 2oz of almond milk. And gradually increase the almond and decrease the formula.

Yeah we tried and in cooking he just gets runny runny poo if it's a piece of cheese or yogurt something with more he will vomit :( we tried soy and again he had the runs and horrible gas all day. He hasn't had any reaction at all to the almond milk so we are sticking with that. He didn't like coconut or rice milk but didn't have a reaction. Today we've gone done to two scoops formula instead of three and he doesn't seem to notice so well leave it like that for a week then one scoop and see how he does

Hmm complicated situation :(
I cannot help you at this situation.

I'd carry on doing what your doing for the time being. Even if you have to flavour it a bit with the formula it will still be a lot cheaper.

Could you try adding something else to the Almond milk to flavour it?

I thought about chocolate almond milk but idk. The kind I've gotten is fortified with vitamins and calcium so I'm not worried about that part I just worry once we stop formula what will he drink? He won't drink any kind of juice and will only drink water if we are outside and he's hot. Never with meals. I know they make vanilla almond milk too he doesn't like sweets much so I guess we'll start with plain and experiment with others later on
