Hiya ladies is it just breast pads that you need for breast feeding?? Do i buy a breast pump straight away or can it wait??

For now yes, you just need breast pads and see how it goes......But just remember that sometimes some women cannot breastfeed for various reasons....but then I suppose you can always get OH to make a mad dash to the Supermarket!

I bought a breast pump, nipple cream, bottles, steriliser, bottle warmer and didn't use any of them!
-I have a Tommee Tippee breast pump still in its box that I kept meaning to try so I could get OH to do some feeds, but i the end I just never bothered.

You need - A baby and a boob lol
You took the words right out of my mouth.

I didn't get to breastfeed but my boobs got so sore, massive and rock hard that I used the breast pump just to relieve them!

Breast pump
Storage bottles
Breast pads
.. could be forgetting things.

;)

Ok, now that I have had a think about this here is my proper answer:

I think you need a mother to learn from, you need patience and time with your LO, you need determination and faith that you both will be able to get through the rough time it can be learning to BF. I have been reading the book from the Le Leche League, and it is super informative. Support is also very important, as it can be so hard for both mother and baby to learn how to BF. Maybe find a chapter of the League, and go to a meeting, that is what I am planning on doing.

all you need is some pads for now you can always get the pump later on if you wish to express.

Yea to start, you def only need pads and boobs. We waited until we came home from the hospital to buy a pump, just to make sure that we were going to be able to BF. And thats because once we really get the hang of things, I want DH and others to be able to feed her as well. We also bought bottles and a sterilizer, but that stuff can wait. When you are in the hospital, there will probably be plenty of lactation consultants that can help you, so take advantage of that. If things dont go smoothly, you can always buy the stuff after. Send your OH out to get the things for you.

Good luck. :hugs:

Well thanks ladies...today i purchased some breast pads from boots...was so confused...there are so many brands...eg: johnsons, boots, tomee tipee. Ended up getting tomee tipee...dont know if i made the right choice but we shall soon find out:) wat sort do u ladies use?

well, I indeed only got pads and nursing bra's to start with, as I thought like Marley, all I need is the baby and my boobs :hi:

but for emergency you should have a shop, which is open long hours and somebody around you, who can get you formula and bottles if you need it!

at first, you will find out in hospital if breastfeeding is working and in any case they have bottles with milk there! (don't know if you are planning a homebirth, though?)

pump, you can wait and see how much milk you have!

me, for example, gave up on pumping as I only got 1 oz out in half an hour!

I never used nipple creme, you can use your milk to rub in, in case your nipples get dry. if they crack you still can go to the pharmacy.

I found muslin squares good, to put under my boob whilst feeding.

maybe patience and determination as well :baby:

all the best :hi:

I just used the supermarkets own brand of pads and they were fine. They're all much of a muchness I think. Depends how much you leak and early on it wasn't a problem for me. It was later as I started cutting feeds out that I used them more.

I used nipple cream - Lansinoh I think or some camomile stuff. Couldn't have managed without that in the early days.
