Success stories with Male Factor Infertility

WhiteOrchid, I think they are wrong, I am not sure what research they did to arrive at this conclusion but generally men who have poor sperm go for ICSI so it's not surprisingly their children may have low sperm count as well as it probably runs in their genes and is being passed on. I doubt ICSI is a contributing factor. At least I really hope it's not. I am even looking at IMSI at the moment cos it helps pick the best sperm

DSemcho, there is difference:

IUI: they take sperm, wash it and place it through your cervix, conception will take place naturally inside your body

IVF: they take your egg and place it in a dish with your DH's sperm. the sperm is supposed to swim to the egg and penetrate the egg on their own. if fertilisation occurred they place the resulting embryo into your uterus.

IVF with ICSI: is practically IVF but the difference is that they take your egg and inject in with your DH's single sperm. if fertilisation occurred they place the resulting embryo into your uterus.

IVF with IMSI: same as ICSI but they use different equipment to pick the single sperm

thank you for the link.

This is a bit strange - "NOTE: Combining high doses of Vitamin C and Vitamin E does not improve sperm quality and induces sperm DNA damage; protective effect is found when only one or the other is taken"

Seems to contradict everything else I've read on this

Yeah. I find it odd to. My DH takes about 1250 of vitamin c everyday plus however much vitamin e is in FertilAid. When he had his semen analysis done in June he didn't have abnormal sperm, just the fluid was to thick...... Maybe the combination of vitamin c and e did it?

hard to say my Dh takes 1,000 of Vit C and 800 of vit E. Somebody recently mentioned that their FS recommended vit C+E for sperm quality. there is so much conflicting info out there.

Here is the relevant research https://humrep.oxfordjournals.org/content/13/5/1240.full.pdf+html . they do not really explain much, their findings are on page 1245 i.e. ascorbic acid (Vit C) and alpha tocopherol (Vit E) together cause DHA damage.

I think just in case I will stop Vit E for my DH and increase Vit C to 2,000 a day.

Dsemcho, good luck with the supplements! You just never know what's going to work. Even if it doesn't, it can help with the success of your ivf treatment. Must be a relief to know that if all else fails you can still try IVF.

Briss, interesting article but I too have a hard time going along with the bottom line conclusion the researchers make. I can see male infertility problems being passed down if the sperm count issues are due to genetics, but still I don't think that would be enough of a reason not to use the procedure. The article doesn't really specify what other health problems are supposedly caused by ICSI and I'm thinking whatever those problems are are likely caused by other factors. Reading some of the nasty comments under the article, I wonder if this "study" was not politically motivated to push for IVF to not be offered by NHS. I am very suspicious of most of the medical research reported by the press.

Well I on,t get 1 round of IVF. We have to save up for it and it'll take us three months. The. After that we have to start saving for our move. I admit if it doesn't work I'll be heart broken.

CaliDreaming, you might be right, there is much politics involved it's hard to figure out what's really going on

there is a very interesting discussion here on sperm DNA fragmentation https://www.fertilethoughts.com/forums/male-factor/688373-high-sperm-dna-fragmentation-test.html apparently if sperm DNA fragmentation is above 30% even ICSI wont work, fertilisation may happen but it will end in mc/chemical. no one mentioned this test to us before but I will check at our follow up appointment.

Briss I had read about the DNA fragmentation issue too. I hope your dh doesn't have that issue. It seems to add a layer of complexity onto everything.

I had my sonogram today and I have 2 follicles bursting to go - one at 22 and one at 26. I am taking the trigger shot tonight and go in Thurs morning for the IUI! Trying not to get my hope up too much since I know the odds are still against us, but you know how it is...

I'm having super sharp cramps in my both my fallopian tubes today and yesterday. Today's was bad enough I had to stop my workout at the gym =/ I can't wait for my appointment tomorrow with my doctor on base.
