Telling hospital staff what you want.

Ha the mec poos are the reason I was grateful to be in hospital for 4 days using their terry nappies lol - no laundry for me.

Meconium just looks like marmite really, maybe mixed with a tiny bit of peanut butter? It is sticky but honestly you will be seeing things in nappies that are a thousand times worse than that! At least with it being sticky it's unlikely to shoot up baby's back; with both of my LOs it stayed right in the centre of the nappy. I just wiped it out (what I could anyway, which probably wasn't much) and washed it as usual. I was using fleece liners but when they got scrunched up the meconium didn't stain the nappy anyway.

My first LO was in sposies for the first 10 days but my second has been in cloth from birth. It would actually really upset me if somebody put a sposie on her now as I love that she's never had one on her bum. It's nice to think that we've done as much as we can to avoid rubbish.

I've had my babies at home (and I'm in the US, so don't take my advice as the voice of experience) but a DF is a labor and delivery nurse and she's told me that many nurses can be pretty cynical when a mom has a really specific birth plan and feel like they are being micromanaged. How you word things can make a big difference in how cooperative the nurses will be.

I would consider writing in the plan that you want skin to skin and that you want your Oh to dress the baby. I think that puts you in control of what goes on the baby without the risk of your birth plan coming off as too prescriptive.

FWIW I think it is a shame that the "tone" of the birth plan can affect how inclined the nurse is to comply with it, but that would be in the back of my mind. Maybe there is a different attitude about birth plans in the UK.

Good thinking serenity! Ill take that into consideration! :)

My hospital provides cloth nappies and puts cloth on automatically. I hadn't thought of that ahead of time to ask not to put a disposable on so I was quite pleased. If your hospital doesn't do cloth though you may want to mention it.

I want your hospital!! LOL
Ours all provide us with Pampers.

Which was ok, as NONE of my cloth diapers fit for the first two weeks, (buying any disposables was a bitter pill to swallow) looking back I am glad I got a chance to ease into it... And glad I use cloth now that I have experienced both.

ETA this thread has now made me super broody, thinking about the magic and awe of those first few moments...

I'm hoping my cloths fit! Eek, they go pretty small and bubs is gunna be a big baby hopefully! :)
