Got a call from the Dr office today. Apparently baby tested positive for spina bifida on the serum screening. Waiting now for a specialist to set up an appointment for further testing to determine whether or not it was a false positive. I hope so. Not that I wouldn't love the baby any less... but... well, you understand. It's hard to imagine your child limited in any way, so... crossing my fingers that everything is actually okay!

I'm trying not to stress about it... I know that false positives are pretty common with those tests, but until we know otherwise I'm going to be battling tears and fears.

Can anyone give me some hope? Did you have a positive test and end up with a normal, healthy baby?

I have nothing to offer except for my prayers pregnancy is hard enough without have to face the possibility of your baby not being well. GL with whatever the out come is

my best friend actually had a pos screen for spina bifida and soemthing else (not the downs) she told me after i had a pos screen for downs. well she told me while i was worried and i finally told her why i hadnt called- she said- I wish i would have know you were about to take that test - because i would have told you not to. She said " i hate that test and I promise i will never take it again" i dint know she went through the same thing because she too- kept it to herself. long story short. baby was fine. She is a perfectly inquisitive and very active 2 yr old. My baby is still baking but my test was a false positive as well... xoxo - easier said than done but try not to stress about it.

I can offer no help about the false positives, other than I have heard multiple times about false positives, I can also give you a small light at the end of the tunnel if by chance it is not a false positive, my cousin in fact has Spina Bifida and it is not the "death sentence" that it is made out to be, she is my age (28) and has 2 beautiful healthy baby boys that she carried to full term (after being told she couldn't even get pregnant) and yes she has bad days where her back hurts but she leads an extremely normal life and if she didnt tell you, you would never know that she has a "debilitating disability". :hugs: to you and I will keep my fingers crossed for you that it is a false positive!

I'm not overly stressed about it. Just hoping for a false positive. Not because I think it's a "death sentence", but I want a healthy baby just like any one of us does.

I wasn't implying that you thought it was a death sentence, I was saying that's the way it is looked at even by doctors, I totally understand wanting a happy healthy baby, as you said we all just want that, and I hope and pray that it's a false positive, and that baby is completely fine!

My brother has spina bifida and is a United States Marine, fully active. I also have a friend who has spina bifida and, like lilminkey's cousin, she has two kids and leads a very normal life, although she can do a few weird things like stretch a certain way and pop every joint in her back. :haha:

Update: We had our in depth ultrasound this morning, and everything looks good on baby. No spine deformations, no excess fluid, nothing! The Dr. said that he thinks it's probably my placenta putting out the little extra AFP, and that I'm probably a slightly higher risk so I need to be careful and if I have any spotting or cramping, I need to call it in. But other than that, everything is good! So relieved!

Great news! A friend of mine tested positive for spina bifida but it ended up the baby didnt have it. She had clef lip though.
