The July 2009 Babies

Sarah I give her broccali whole, chicken whole but cut in strips, she doesnt choke now just gags and gets bits that are too big.

so yesterday I leave aaliyah with merv as I needed 2 pop out I put my coat and becuase I didnt get hers she starts crying "mum mum mum!" then starts crawling after me :dohh: felt so bad for her :( but should seen the smile on her face when I came home :happydance:

well done morgon with the tooth aaliyah still has zero lol

Okay... think we'll need to give BLW a try as Max is getting a little fed up with his 'mushy-meals' and I end up wearing more than he eats... I've done my first aid course (to concer my phobia about him choking) so feel prepared if he bites of more than he can chew...

So can I have some advice? :flower:

I've just been looking at videos on You-tube and people seem to give lots of fruit and veg and large peices/quarters, and the baby can bit of peices e.g. baked potatoes, carrots, chicken, avocado, broccoli, etc.

Like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzzPTRUWMHI

Is this what you guys who are doing BLW do?

When you give something like spag bol, do you just let them grab handfuls?

How do you do yoghurt?

Giving half a banana? Is that safe? Or should it really be cut up?

If I want to give him large peices of chicken, what is the best method of cooking it?

He can't eat with us as we eat at 8.30pm... so I'll still be making his meals separately but will be happy to demo the eating for him!

Thanks :)

Sarah, that video is pretty good. I would make only a couple of comments -- 1) at one point you see mom put the food in baby's mouth -- don't do that. It is tempting, but it will increase the chances they choke and 2) make sure to eat something with them, even if just a snack. BLW is about more than just learning to eat, it is also about learning manners and about meal time. Otter learned very quickly that meals are for chatting, too, and often chats to us while we eat.

I would start out with big fruit and veg like in the video as it is easiest for them. Move on to meat next. Meat is a little harder as they can't bite pieces off so have to figure out how to just suck on it. Bread is good to add shortly after fruit and veg, too. Otter struggled with bread in the early days as it is sticky so he gagged on it frequently. But it is a favorite now. Just becareful not to give too much as it has high salt content.

As for cooking the chicken -- you can cook it anyway you would eat it.

Also, in the video, that baby is offered lots of stuff with the peel on (like melons) you can do that, but you can offer it without peel, too. Try both ways and see which way baby likes it better. Banana is fine to offer whole. It is one of Otter's favorites. At first they might have a hard time with it as it is slippery and hard to hold. That is why you can leave part of the peel on (like in the video).

As for yogurt -- yeah, that is a tough one! :haha: Otter has made QUITE a mess with that. Eventually they learn to dip their fingers and suck it off. You can also offer a preloaded spoon... just load the spoon and hand it to them. That is messy at first, too!

For pastas and stuff, just offer it how you would eat it. They will use their hands to pick it up and shove fistfuls in their mouth. But that takes time to learn so don't expect them to figure it out fast. Otter is only now getting the hang of that stuff and we have been BLW for 3 months. Your guy may pick it up faster because he is older and already has some skills developed.

I have a couple of things I can share:

Learning to suck oatmeal off fingers:

Early days with carrot sticks:

Early days veg with cheese sauce:

Early days with watermelon (video). In this one you can see him gag (not choke!) at the beginning. It is important to know the difference. Don't intervene if they are just gagging. That is normal and part of learning how to move food around in their mouth. Otter has even gagged so bad once that he vomited after. That is common, too, and nothing to worry about (even if it is scary to watch the first time!!)

Thanks so much TL :hugs: Some great info. Max is really telling me this is what he wants so I think it is best for him.

Hi ladies Its only little old me! (Babyblues2)

Lily was born on 12th july, weighing in atn 6lb 1oz.

She wont crawl, got no teeth but has been trying to get them for ages!!

I am Fully breastfeeding still and am planning on doing until shes 1.

How are we all? Havent spoke to any of you (appart from Jellybean2009) for ages!! Well since we all gave birth!!

xx

Hi all!

Forgot this group was here too! Glad to see everyone is doing well! Maia has grown like a weed - it is scary! She is looking less and less "baby-like" and more and more "toddle-like" every day. It's kind of sad, actually :( WAAAHHHH.. Even the pediatrician commented on it - that she looks like a little girl :( Even though she isn't big - 25-50th percentile on just about everything (except for her head - she's at the 90th for that! Thank goodness I had a c section, huh?).

What else is new? She's become mobile (crawling, cruising, standing) and that seems to have coincided with a sudden inability to sleep, so we are suffering here a bit recently.

Hope all stays well with everyone! Will try to pop back more often!

:)

Redonkulous...https://https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/6535694/Pregnant-woman-reported-to-social-services-over-half-decorated-home.html

My kid has two bottom teeth and one coming in the top. I'll give him chunks of banana to eat, and small pieces of meat and cooked veggies.

He's been pulling up since 7 months, but he doesn't do cruising. Of course, we don't have a lot of stuff for him to cruise on, and some of his outfits don't make it easy with the footies on them. He babbles.

:yipee: aaliyah finally has teeth 2 at bottom and one at top and the one next to the top one just starting to come through :)

she walks really well assested its just trying to get her to let go  but she cruses around the flat all day long or holds on to my legs as I walk backwards which is a life saver for my back haha

Max is the same (re the walking)! Will have to try the leg thing as my back is suffering too. He's just got the bottom two teeth but I think more might be on the way as he's such as drooler atm. He's also a baby-bully... he actually grabbed one of his friends by the hair the other day, then pushed him face first into the carpet! :dohh:

Still waking once, or twice at night  We stopped breastfeeding a couple of weeks ago (as he was constantly biting, then refusing....), so now when he wakes I give him watered down formula, and am gradually reducing the qantity. We're down to 3oz, at half-strength, so hopefully get him off the night feeds fairly soon. Eating well, a combo of BLW and Trad Weaning. Says 'Mum', 'Dad', 'tat' (cat) and 'uh, oh!'.

oh dear naughty max, aaliyah had a go at an 18month old other day to be faire 2 her she did nick her toy she was playing with haha

How long do your LOs sleep? Naps and night? Im having so much trouble with Soph she used to sleep solid till about 8 months, 2 nights ago she was up every hour... Im so tired!! Xx

Aailyah is normally up 2 times at night has 2 hour naps in the morning and if really tired another in the afternoon, goes bed around 8 up at 12 then back down till 6 thrn up at 8.

last night she had 2half hour nap then bed at 8 slept till 2 then got up for the day at 8 Im still trying to find the balance :)

on another note tooth number 4 is out and proud woo

Ollie goes to bed at 8pm usually wakes up for milk at about 12-1am then wakes again about 4-5am then up in the morning at about 8-8.30am for his weetabix
He has one nap during the day at about 1pm ish

So July mummies how have we enjoyed the last 9ish months of our babies lives???
Have any of you had hard time with your LO?

What have you all got planned for your LO's 1st birthday??

Me and hubby have a party planned with a bouncy castle big enough for adults and children to use and lots of food, music, cake and jelly and ice cream yum!

No birthday plans yet! Best start thinking of that, I guess.

Otter goes to bed at 630 or 7 pm and usually sleeps through until 530 am. If something is off (teething, sick, etc) he'll wake once at some point, but a BF will put him back out. He's still BFing 3 times per day (morning, noon, bedtime). He's a pro at BLW and eating loads of solids. As for naps, they vary hugely! If at daycare he takes 2-3 naps of 30 min each. If at home he takes 2-3 naps of 1-3 hours each (HUGE difference!)

I have loved every minute of the last 9-10 months!! :yipee:

And Otter took his first unassisted steps yesterday!! 9 months 3 weeks old.

Awww Well Done Otter xx

Ollie finds it hard to nap if there's lots going on like if he goes to sleep he will miss something too nosey for his own good lol

Well done Otter! Glad to hear he's let up on those 3hrly feeds during the night too.

Max goes to bed at 7.30pm-ish and wakes once or twice. I stopped breastfeeding a few weeks ago, so he has a bottle when he wakes. I've been gradually decreasing the amount, and watering it down, and he's down to 1-2oz when he wakes, so I think it's really just habit now, so trying to resettle him without feeding... works.... rarely! But he have hope. He still has Morning, mid-morning, afternoon and before bed milk too.

We have relataives flying in to stay for a couple of week for Max's birthday, so will have to plan a little party I guess. It's the middle of summer then... 35 degrees and 95% humidity  so I suppose it will need to be indoors.
