Not read every response, but if it were me, I'd have slept outside his door for as long as it took for him to learn that he wasn't going to get downstairs once it was bedtime. He'd have a reward chart for nights stayed in bed, and we'd make a big fuss of him for being a big clever boy. It would be hideous and I know I'd be exhausted, but I'd take a month off work to do it if necessary. A three year old can be reasoned with. It doesn't sound like he was treated as a person here, with feelings and intelligence
