Those who dont let you lo see/watch the tv...

Even though we have the tv on the majority of the time now - doesn't mean I wont limit it down the road when she actually will want to watch it. I will. Also will limit video games and she wont be reading her books from a nook, kindle ect.

what do you have against the kindle out of curiosity? Its e-ink, its not backlit... there aren't moving images on there, I actually can't see why that would be a concern.
It would be a lot more ecological than paper for books.

I don't sit Aubrey down in her bumbo and let her watch for hours, but sometimes when she gets worked up and won't calm down, turning her toward the tv for a few minutes is a distraction. I am a stay at home mom and I hate the quiet so I almost always have the tv on in the background. Does she look at it sometimes? Yes. She gets very bored very easily and it is exhausting trying to keep up with entertaining her, so it's nice to have a few minute break where she'll stare at the tv.

I was very anti tv in the beginning too, but as long as she's not watching it for hours on end, just a few minutes a few times a day I don't think its a big deal. I think she just likes the colors and the movement. She stares at lamps too. :haha:

Nothing that has to do with her developmentally - I have a Nook. BUT, there is nothing better than a good (real) book in my opinion. I'm talking from now - 13? 14? When they could ask for something like that. You know what I mean? I didn't have a lot growing up but I had books, real books.

I feel like there are worse things in our world than having a paper back book if we're going to talk about the eco system, you know?

My mum has a kindle, i think its a brilliant idea, but i dont think id buy one because i just love the feeling of a book in my hands... Theres nothing like sitting down with a proper book :) though im sure when jacob is a teen, books will be obselete

I agree, maybe I am old fashioned but there is something about having a physical book that's so much more satisfying than reading on a scrren.

nthing wrong with tv as long as you dont use it to entertain the lo for hours.its your job as a mother to keep them occupied and not fill there brains with too much tv altho i will say the programmes that are on now days are very educational

I love children's tv, it's been wonderful in helping my LO develop neck strength and to enjoy tummy time. Ive popped her on a play mat since birth with the tv on in the background and its distracted her enough to develop the necessary muscles. she now finds tv boring! I put it on, she glances at it and then rolls around playing with toys. I think by showing her the tv it's now seen as something normal and not a treat. It's often kids who are not allowed to watch tv except as a treat that have an unhealthy attitude towards it as they grow up. Kids want what they can't have!

I love a good book! However I read so fast that I get through a good novel twice a week (if on holiday with a long journey) I do like the Kindle as it saves space in my bag.

In the first weeks, whilst I was establishing BF and was anchored to the sofa for hours, I used to watch a movie or some shows, but LO was turned in towards me and so wasn't exposed to any of the visual stimuli. After that~ we didn't have the TV on for the first year of LO's life. If he was awake, the TV was off!

Now he's a little bit older we're a bit more relaxed, and dont mind putting it on in the background at the weekend if we're staying in. His play-room doesn't have a TV in it though, so the majority of his time is spent away from the screen. But, if he wanders through to the living room he can see whatever sport my OH has on :haha:

It's just about balance as far as I'm concered

It's definitely about balance and knowing your individual child. I limit TV to a few bits first thing in the morning and if we have an overtired situation late afternoon...! I must say I anticipate the first few months of LO no2 being around involving a bit more telly for Ruby as she is poor at independent play but we'll see. Also Ruby sits there transfixed by the TV so I'm more inclined to restrict her watching it than if she only half watched while playing like some other children do.

I put it on for a reason, like because she enjoys a programme, or because she is tired and I need to cook dinner, I definitely wouldn't just have it on all day. Amongst other reasons that would drive me absolutely nuts.

In any case I didn't offer any kids TV to her until she was 16 months ish. No way would I have sat her in front of it much before then.

ooh i know what you mean!

I have alot of antique books 100+yrs old and it feels like im holding a part of history

I can't imagine reading a book from a screen...! I don't know why. I have to do proof reading as part of my job sometimes and I alllllways have to print the stuff off to proof it, I can't do it on screen.

Do you wonder if maybe she is transfixed by the t.v because it isn't on much? We don't have live t.v, just bt vision so I only put stuff on if there is something I want to watch rather than keeping it on all day, so nowadays when Ilet her watch programs she is hypnotised by the screen! Some of her little friends couldn't care less about it though, although it is helpful when I'm trying to cook dinner :haha:

Tell you the truth I don't see anything wrong with letting you LO watching TV depending on what it is.... I am not saying you should let your Lo watch tv 24/7 and make it a permanent baby sitter No not at all. What I do is let her watch sesame street everyday, My LO loves sesame street every time it comes on Her and I start singing and dancing with it. I also point out things out to her. She also loves elmo she starts smiling when he comes on. My Big thing is what is the difference of those Vtech or leapfrog readers that play things like books and stuff instead of actually reading them to your child? I really don't think people understand

I let my LO watch baby shows after we wake up in the morning, and I get to go upstairs and enjoy my breakfast and morning coffie alone... its the only time of the day she will actually watch tv long enough. Sometime I stick a load of laundry in too!!! After this time, she is no longer interested in TV and wants to play! So I use it to my advantage and get to enjoy some me time as well as get nay small things done that I can!

i wouldnt want her to have a kindle as i think it takes all the fun out of books!! yes there good for adults/teenagers though x

Eloise "watches" a bit of cbeebies in the mornings whilst playing. She will probably be doing something whilst watching it though. She also pretty much constantly has a book in her hands that shes looking at. I see no problem with TV although i agree with whoever said some of it is fearmongering. They're going to watch it somewhere at some point though.

poppy watches tv every day and she is way ahead in her development. you can find 'studies' for anything these days!

edited to add: she learns a lot from tv too!

Harry watches some tv, i have it on during the day for my own sanity but he's only ever sat alone infront of it when im having a wee! i hate it when he watches it and if he does i'll pick him up and move him so he cant see it!

i dont see any harm in tv. if you explain to your kids that whats on it is not real then it should be ok. unless ofcourse the tv is the babysitter.

when ur watchin the telly, your mind goes into the same brainwave state that you'd go into during a hypnotic trance And what happens when you're in a hypnotic trance? The hypnotist implants SUBLIMINAL, subconscious messages which have an impact on your perception and reality.

For example, tv commercials are full of subliminal messages as well as catchy tunes, etc. which you may think have no impact on your decision making but subconsciously, you are more likely to buy a certain product because you saw it on whatever commercial. (google television, subliminal messages in commercials for yourself) Children are especially open to suggestion, as their brains take everything in like sponges. Big corporations know this, which is why they are willing to spend thousands of dollars to parade their products on the air, even if it's only for a few seconds. Trust me, when you actually begin to research the subliminals in advertising and television, whats staggers you is not what they do and whats there but the scale of it!

please, PLEASE watch this , before you disagree with me! It's about what tv actually does to your brain chemistry. A must see.

television is a form of mind control. it is constantly shaping your views of the world, who your children's role models will be, what music they will like, what they value. It has a much bigger impact than you think.

It will even sway your political beliefs. can you spot the subliminal message in this political advertisement?

and its not just commercials which contain subliminal messages.
Do your children watch enjoy disney movies?

how bout spongebob?

Don't just take my word for it. do more of your own research. you wil be shocked.
