Really need your help, advice...about to throw in the towel and I really dont want to :(

DS is 3 weeks old and we both have thrush :(

DS has quite a layer of white on his tongue...I think I have a mild case and it seems to go then possibly come back? DS constantly had his since 3-4 days old.

We were given Daktarin at first, a cream for my nipples and the gel for DS but it wasnt doing anything so weny back and was given nystatin for DS and I have fluconazole tablets (50mg once a day for 14 days).

Like I said my pain comes and goes which makes me think im getting rid but LOs tongue is not getting better or worse tbh...looks like its spreading to his bum too :(.

Im just getting so fed up with it now, I was so determined that I was going to BF for 6 months atleast this time and its just looking likely that its not going to happen...

So I had a thought, would it help if I wad to exclusively express to prevent re infection then hopefully put him back the breast once we both have got rid? Obviously I would need to constantly sterilise everything, pumps bottles dummies etc.

Or anyone got a fast effective way to get rid of LOs thrush mainly, managing to keep mine above board I think with fluconazole and have been taking probiotic tablets twice daily and drinking actimel yoghurts...

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Xx

I heard grape fruit extract is good for it. I think there's something about it on the Kelly mom website.

i heard gentian violet is the most effective. 1% solution in water. we both had thrush and the doctors didn't offer that bc it was 'messy' but if ours didn't get cleared by the nystatin and diflucan we were going to do that next. you can get it at the pharmacy over the counter. i read about it in ina mays guide to breastfeeding! plus to keep from reinfecting you need to wash all your laundry every day in very hot water and a, hot dry cycle. plus sanitize anything that goes in babys mouth like pacifiers in boiling water every day! wash all your hand towels and showering towels each day as well in hot water.

i don't think you would need to pump though. the diflucan should keep you from reinfecting each other, plus you can paint your nipples with the nystatin or gentian violet you use that to help prevent spreading. we used to dunk her dummy in the nystatin too and give her that to suck on between doses!

Don't give up! We dealt with thrush for a long time. Gentian Violet is very effective and should get rid of it in baby's mouth. You can paint the 1% solution in their mouth or put it on your nipples once a day before a feeding. You need to treat for weeks (not necessarily with gentian violet the whole time, I think you can only use it up to a week). After that, you can use a solution of 15 drops of grapefruit seed extract in one ounce distilled water and rub that on baby's mouth and your nipples. Just because the symptoms go away doesn't mean it's gone so continue this for a few weeks. Also like others have said wash everything in hot water and you can add drops of grapefruit seed extract to the wash cycle too. Definitely keep up with the probiotics and dilute some of the powder from the capsule in water and swab on baby's mouth. Coconut oil is another good antifungal. you can user it on both your nipples and baby's mouth. You should also get rid of all sugars, flours, and yeast out of your diet for a few weeks. I know it sounds overwhelming, but if you can get rid of it for good now, you won't have to keep dealing with it like we did. I actually got it in my mouth too (so I can tell you it's not very painful for baby). I know it is terrible, and I feel for you!! But it will get better! Pm me if you have any questions

Oh also I would quit the nystatin (but speak to your doctor first). They load that stuff with sugar so that the baby will drink it but sugar feeds yeast. We used that at first and our daughters thrush got worse

You can use coconut oil on the diaper rash too! Sorry I keep thinking of things...

I would also get your baby's latch checked by a lactation consultant because often that contributes to the problem. OK I think I'm done now :) good luck!! You are a great mommy and are doing a wonderful job!! Hang in there!
