I cant take this anymore. Baby only feeding like every 2-3 hour for only 5 min. Nappies have dropped to around 5 wet and 1 dirty (although it as a lot) and he only gained 4 ounce for the week.

He goes on and sucks like mad for 2 mins then the rest of the time he only sucks but I hear no swallows... at the end of my tether.
Im thinking its more hassle than its worth now...

yes it is hard, SO HARD. but you are giving him the food that is designed for him specifically to eat! and he IS gaining, it doesn't matter how much!! it sounds like you are doing well (besides how stressful it is!) :hugs: keep trying hun, you have support!

Aw hun :hugs: Sounds like you are doing great to me! 4oz is a brilliant gain for a breastfed baby for a week! Remember, they have different growth charts than the standard ones in the Red Book. The fact that he is sucking and not swallowing at the end of a feed is a GOOD THING...it means he knows he will be needing more milk and is trying to increase your supply accordingly.

Maybe you could try expressing for a little while after each feed? This will increase your supply massively after a short while (I promise!) and offering your little one the breast really regularly through the day.

I promise you, it get's better and the biggest learning curve a breastfeeding mummy has to go through is learning to trust your baby...they know EXACTLY what they need to do, exactly how much they need and how to get what they want.

You are doing fab, just keep it going...it really is worth carring on. xx

Im at the point where I dread the net feed though. Just want to enjoy some time with baby and feel I cant. so upset.

wish he would just stay on for 5 mins more!

I never get much expressing though... really thinking about just giving up but dont want to

Some babies don't need more than 5min...Hayden only nursed that long or shorter after a little bit. If he's gaining and is having wet diapers it sounds like he's doing great :) And 2-3hrs between feeds is very normal too

We had the same at the start and I nearly gave up several times.

The only thing I can say is it does get better and the advice given above is good advice.

I used to set myself targets - like - if its not better in a week I will think about stopping - and these kept moving and now 4 months in it is so easy (apart from him going through a nosey stage).

Don't feel pressured into continuing though if you have considered all your options and decided its not for you.

La used to feed like this and it drove me crazy! But 5 wet nappies and one pooey one is good, as is a 4oz gain. Give up if you're ready to but don't feel you have to. hugs.

I remember feeling like a milk machine but i had the opposite problem. He would feed for up to 40 minutes every 3 hours. I don't quite understand what you are dreading about each feed. What are you finding frustrating? Is he having a good feed and then fussing for a long time. If he is sucking and not fussing then as said above he is probably increasing the supply. They go through short periods (a day or so) when they feed more often but they pass. The first few weeks are the hardest but even if you stop today you should be really proud. Good luck.

I avnt read the replys just wanted to give u a :hugs: it can b hard at times, the nappies seem to b a fine amount, my lo poos every other day! 4 ounce is enough in a week i dont think my lo puts that on in a week! You dont have to here them swallow aslong as hes sucking. Just remember, happy mum happy baby only u no what is best 4 u just remember we are all here 4 support! x

i completely agree with babyshambelle
at least he IS gaining and getting wet and dirty nappies
if you persevere, im sure it will get less frustrating - offer him the breast often :)

and with the expressing, ive only just been able to get 1oz and my baby is almost 2 months - but i have found that taking that much daily has improved my supply

keep at it, you might regret stopping if you dont give it a good enough go :)

Sending you lots of hugs!!

It is just so bloody hard at this early stage, you do feel like all you are doing is feeding babes and its all unknown.

What you have given that baby so far is SO precious, he could not have asked for a better start!! But as some of the girls have said if you feel like you have given it your best shot and you want to stop then do. But make sure you are sure so you dont regret it.

I think it sounds like you are doing a grand job myself and if you give yourself a bit longer then you might turn a corner and find its all worked itself out!! He could also be having a bit of a growth spurt at the moment and be trying to increase your demand with the odd feeds times/lengths.

Hope it gets sorted out for you hun so you can get on with enjoying your time with your lil man!!

*HUGS*

I know it's hard, hon. But I agree with what the others have said. It sounds like things are going fine from the baby's point of view. Take a deep breath and try to trust your body and your baby. So far, so good! Only stop if you are really sure it is what is right for you and baby. :hugs:

My lo is 17 days old, and only feeds for 5 minutes at a time. she is gaining and has wet and dirty nappies. I was told to ignore hiow often and how long they feed and go with it. Some women have a faster let down and some babys can just get what they need. My lo feeds every 2-3 hours as well. I was told all was ok

2-3 hours is a great amount of time to go between feeds! How long were you expecting him to go? Even FF babies eat every 3-4 hours, so you wouldn't be changing things that much if you switched. Blythe is almost 7 months old and eats every 2-3 hours, it's totally normal.

Sorry if I'm not understanding, but I really don't see what the problem is if he nurses for 5 mins every 2-3 hours, am I missing something?

Sorry, just realised that you're worried about his weight gain. Don't be, it's great that he's put on that much. As long as he's happy and seems fine in himself then he is.

Don't dushearten! My baby only gained 4 oz in a whole MONTH!

You are doing great, baby staying on boob longer doesn't mean they will go longer between feeds, Noah used to be on the boob ages but still only went 2-3 hours in between feeds
