Tomboy mothers of daughters, advice please!

My daughter loves dressing in her princess dress but then she grabs a sword to kill the dragon with herself! (then I say I feel sad for the dragon:cry: and she puts it in a cage instead :haha:).

I'm not very girly myself, and I actually was a rocket scientist before my daughter was born. But I was thrilled to have a daughter because I was excited to raise a girl who will know she's not limited by her gender and can be what she wants to be. Just think of it as a great opportunity to bring up a strong, confident girl- no matter where her interests lie.

I will admit I hate princesses and my LO still does not know they exist!

Holly isn't very girly at all. She is the best footballer that people have ever seen for her age. She has always loved football. She also likes cars, trucks and bin carts. She likes to dress up girly sometimes but is more of a tomboy at heart, as was I.

I understand your concern! We're a gamer family too, videogames and d&d, check ;) without being a tomboy i never had interest in 'girl' things and most of my friends were guys. Gender stereotypes really bother me so I try hard to keep our house neutral.

I have the opposite advice, don't find out the gender beforehand, keep it a surprise! I found out the gender for my son and was soooo disappointed. Wanted a kickarse daughter, didnt know how id relate to a boy and dh has 4 brothers. Of course as soon as I met the little wee boy he was I felt in love. So avoid the months of possible disappointment! ;)

For our second I was so glad we didn't find out the gender. We were 100% convinced it was a boy though from looking at scans, and I had tons of em. Well it was a girl!my first thought was oh my god I have to learn how to do hair and all that stuff! *face palm*

Luckily I have everything from our son, gender neutral. Our families think we're nuts (OK some of that might be the gaming;)) but I really don't want her awash in pink and princesses. I returned most of our gifted clothes, i had politrly asked for no pink but its just ridiculous the amount of noxious pink in babyland and I think most people can't help themselves =p

I watch the amount of gender stereotyping that goes on at my sons daycare and it makes me sad. Lots of recent immigrant, traditional conservative families. But hey things are changing for the better, slowly.

Jet hope I don't embarrass my kids *too* much by being the weird mom with the black clothes and purple hair;)

I never pictured myself having a girl.. I grew up with all brothers *5 of them!*. I always just assumed I would have boys I guess. I'm not really a tomboy but I don't wear makeup, my hair is usually just thrown up, and I change to comfy pants the moment I walk in the house. I had a girl, and she is awesome. Like staralfur said, I couldn't imagine not having a girl now, and I'm sure I would feel the same if I had had a boy. I understand your worries as I think a lot of people have them, but in reality they don't matter unless you let them.

Each child with develop into their own style. Mine will only wear Nike sneakers (sometimes princess play shoes) only likes a certain hat, hates dresses cute shoes and boots, There is no "doing her hair" it's chasing her around with a brush if she needs it untangled. Wears plain cotton shirts (preferably with kitties) I have in no way influenced what she wears.. She won't wear it if she doesn't like it. They have no concept of boys or girls toys, they are just toys unless you tell them any different. She loves everything from dolls to amphibians.

So it doesn't matter if your a tomboy and have a girl- they will develop their own tastes in things no matter what you do or don't do in that regard. If she likes princess dresses- she will let you know what ones. If she likes trucks and trains, that's great too.

I had my heart set on a boy too.. Dh and I had a hard time adjusting to the idea of having a girl. I do some girly things but not many I'm much more outdoors get dirty and nerdy. My daughter has now actually made me nervous about having a boy. She is fearless! She loves to have her hair done she points out things that are cute, is obsessed with makeup!!! But at the same time will beg you to put on her princess dress so she can go put her baby in her truck and go off roading. She loves hockey, playing in the dirt. Thinks Godzilla is just about the funniest thing she's ever seen. She is the best of both worlds! I couldn't be happier and prouder
