Tragedy! 20 children and 6 adults killed in a school shooting in CT. I'm devastated!

When will America sort out their gun laws?!?!?! (Nothing against you lovely American ladies!)

I think about this frequently too, chick.

I am so devastated by this. 2012 has not been a good year for us. From the theater shooting here in Colorado to now an elementary school shooting, this is terrible. My heart is so broken for the families.

The worst part of this particular discussion is the sooooo many of us are thinking it, questions ARE being asked, and HAVE been asked several times before, but no one ever takes any notice.

I know. :(

I just don't understand why some of these guns are available to the public. Business Insider & CNN state that the shooter used a semi-automatic Bushmaster .223. I don't understand why anyone but military would need a gun like this. He was so easily able to go in and gun down all those innocent children in seconds.

But I don't want to go into gun laws or control or why we should or shouldn't because right now what's important is that we think about those poor beautiful souls.

But suffice to say though, I will never own or allow any guns in my household.

When I heard about this it just ripped my heart in two. I can only imagine what those poor families are going through.

-And as for the gun laws, any time this type of thing happens everybody jumps on the gun control bandwagon. Personally, I feel that if somebody wants to do something bad they are going to find a way to do it. Today a man in China slashed several children and an elderly woman with a knife. No gun, but a knife. If they don't have a gun they will just use bombs, fire, knives, blunt force you name it they will find a way around it and achieve their goal of harming people. Plus, making guns illegal or even just more strictly regulated will only make it harder for regular people to get them, not the crazy or criminally minded people. Just look at drugs, plenty of crazy people and criminals are still able to get them and they are completely illegal. We have two guns in the house and I've very seriously considered getting my permit to carry one on me because I'm often alone with just my infant son and I WILL defend myself and my baby. BUT that is just me, and every person has their own feelings.

Apparently one of the music teachers hid 15 children in a closet and the shooter began banging on the door shouting "let me in, let me in"
Imagine how frightened they most of all been :(

I cant believe whats happened. Why would anyone do this? Poor kids and family

Absolutely horrific. Breaks my heart.

At the same time I wish the media frenzy would not take these stories and run with it. I understand people want to know what's going on, but publishing the killers name, photo, personal information ad libidum, does nothing but glorify the killer. The crazies want to go down in flames. The media makes it sooo much worse...

With the media, I'm a little bit surprised there are pictures of children being posted, kwim? Aren't they supposed to have release forms signed?

For any parents wondering how to address this with their children, a facebook friend posted this and I thought it might be helpful: https://www.nasponline.org/resources/crisis_safety/terror_general.aspx

Great post hon.

My LO is still young so I don't need to explain and I hope I never have to explain something like this. :sad1:

Living in CT, we got a phone call today saying there would be police officers at the schools when the kids went home. Being at the hospital, I'm not sure what my boys know. My mom said she isn't going to bring it up unless they ask questions.

I just can't wrap my head around this. I have no words...

We in Canada send our love and prayers. I wish stuff like this would stop happening in the USA. Everyday it's something.

It is truly heartbreaking - and even more so as I truly believe the US has lost its control on gun policy & these events will keep on happening.
Perhaps this isn't the time to discuss gun policy but when is? These events happen, the issue gets avoided out of respect for families and victims but never gets brought up properly again until a tradegy like this is repeated.

Ive been hearing about this all day its very sad and very devistating i just cant wrap my mind around it what guy in there right mind would go into and elementary school and shoot up a bunch of kids it is just terrible.. r.i.p for students and staff who lost there lives today :( i held my son extra close today i cant imagin what those parents are going threw :(

Tragic. I am thinking of them all x

My thoughts are with those little people and their families; also to the staff who are no longer here. There are simply no words.

I thought Obama's speech was one of the most moving things I've seen and heard. He spoke as a father and a president - how he managed to hold it together is beyond me.

I'm also thinking of the other children and staff. School is supposed to be a safe haven, a happy place. To have that innocence shattered is truly devastating.

Fly high angels. Your teachers will be up there looking after you xx

:( Thinking of all the children and the teachers :( Just can't get my head around it

Amen to this! We have a gun purely for protection. The gun law band waggon gets a little heavy when these events happen but you explained it perfectly...the criminals are gonna find a way to get a hold of one so the normal law abiding citizen should be allowed to defend themselves against it. If more people had guns, less of these criminals would think about shooting up a place imo. I hear of a story in Texas where a daughter wanted to bring her gun in with her at a restaurant but her father told her to keep it in the car, it'll be fine but it just so happen to be the one time she left it behind the restaurant got robbed and shot her dad.

As for who wondered where the shooter got such an automatic weapon, black market. They sell either used military or stolen military guns. You'd be surprised just how easy it is just for a person like you and me to get a 9mm underground with a few phone calls.

But my sympathies to the famliies.

I can't stop thinking about this and wanting to cry. I read they were most likely kindergarten and first graders. I teach that age group myself and it makes it seem so real, especially after seeing the photos the head posted on twitter over the last year of the kids just being kids at school, doing the same things that we do at our school, in classrooms just like the ones we teach in. The kids I teach came in yesterday morning all full of how many sleeps til Christmas and what they'd got in their advent calendars and those little ones would have been just the same :(. Its making me think what would I do to protect the children in my care if it happened here. It is heartbreaking. Those poor, poor families and community. And how that school will ever recover having lost so many children and staff I just don't know.

This story is so sad. I cant imagine what the children and staff must have been thinking when it was going on :nope: You send your children to school were they should be safe and the staff go to work to be safe also.

Im so scared to let Freya go to any school.

This maybe a dumb question but how come it happens in America and not in England :flower:
